HAMMONDSVILLE, OHIO - Three grievances were brought before the Edison Local School District Board of Education during an executive session Thursday.

Grievances included: a grievance from the cooks concerning the posting of hours; a grievance by Sandy Slates concerning payment of money owed her from a September grievance that was ruled in her favor; and a bus driver grievance over insurance coverage that the board is threatening to cut back.

The initial bus driver grievance was brought to the board during the November board meeting, and the board extended the four effected bus drivers' benefits until the end of the year.

At the end of an executive session to discuss the grievances, President Derek Siragusano offered Ohio Association of Public School Employees field representative Lenora Giles a deal to extend the bus drivers' insurance if the union would pull the grievances from the cooks and Sandy Slates from the table.

Giles informed Siragusano that it would be a violation of labor practices and she wanted no part of it.

In response, the board tabled all grievances for 30 days during which time the four effected bus drivers will have their insurance coverage cut from fully paid by the district to only half paid.

"Each of these bus drivers' insurance cost the district $1,500 a month. I would like to point out that their contract states that if they work under 30 hours a week, they are only entitled to partial benefits. The board is trying to be generous by continuing this coverage until June when the contract is up for negotiations, but they are not willing to work with us. The offer is still on the table though. We want to settle this thing," said Siragusano.
