WXMI TV 17 NEWS
KENT COUNTY, MICH. - A bus driver in Kent County is suspended from work after a 4-year-old girl was left out in the rain as she was dropped off at school Friday morning.

The child's mother says she wants to be sure the driver is never behind the wheel of a school bus again.

It happened at the Wellerwood Campus of Ken-o-sha School, a place for special needs students in the county. 4-year-old Shelby Van-liew was dropped off in her wheelchair in the cold rain. She can't walk, she can't talk, she just had to sit their until someone brought her inside soaking wet.

The district says standard procedure is the child waits inside the bus until the teacher's aide comes. Her mother, Toni, was told the driver said she was in a hurry.

"Normally, the bus driver's supposed to sit there, they can get them undone or whatever, but you don't just set a child out in the rain," said VanLiew. "Here she is, come get her, you don't do that."

Shelby's clothes had to be dried at the school, her teacher called Toni crying.

Kent Intermediate School District sent us a statement saying:

"This is unacceptable behavior and much less than we expect from our employees. Immediate action was taken, as the driver was suspended pending the outcome of an investigation..."

there is no excuse good enough to justify this.
