A First Student bus driver has been assigned a different route following an incident aboard a bus in early November.
At about 11:45 p.m. on Nov. 5, a woman approached a school bus carrying students on Monad Road near Olympic Village. The woman claimed a person nearby was armed with a gun, according to Cal Hull, the senior regional vice president for First Student's Western area.
"Because of the extraordinary nature of the claim, the driver allowed this person to get on the bus," Hull said.
The driver notified First Student's dispatcher, who called police who responded to the situation, Hull said.
Billings police Lt. Joe Bryce said the woman, who was "hallucinating or having mental problems," was removed from the scene and taken for psychological counseling.

| So what should this driver have done? That should be the question. What procedure was supposed to be followed? Did the driver call dispatch first or unilaterally make the decision on their own? Was the threat of danger enough to let a stranger on the bus? Or was the woman who was allowed on the bus in the end the threat? And why does it say 11:45 PM, shouldn't that be AM or were they out really, really late? |

| It's hard to have a answer for every type of cituation. The key factor for making any decision is knowing the first priority is to keep your passengers safe. The question here is what was the the drivers priority? |

Keeping the kids safe, as the highest priority, becomes confusing when management and school boards fail to honor that commitment in policy and in support of their bus drivers. We all know or certainly should know that expecting the unexpected hardly covers the multitude of issues out there, especially when the unexpected comes from school boards and management. Some things remain the driver's call and regardless of the cliché and even training. A decision must be made by the bus driver and sometimes on the spot. I view this event as the driver's call and should not be overly criticized. Myself, I certainly can not decide what I would do in this specific situation. The more I think about it, and fighting the constant paranoia we are forced to work under, I'm convinced I would not simply drive off leaving the woman to fend for herself. And to remain stopped under the threat of an alleged angry gunman in the area creates another risk. Tough call and one I would not want to second guess the driver's decision in advance - ever. (jk)
