Here is one - Special Ed students with an IEP that do not require any special accomodations to and from school. Accordingly, they will not have the IEP annotated for transportation. Therefore, transportation does not know a particular student has a special need in the school district. This can be a problem if the student has an IEP for a behaviroal problem and the transportation office or bus driver has no knowledge. My question... How does your district handle these students with no transportation on the IEP, but might have a disability that transportation needs or should know about. What mechanism do you use for the notification process???
Thanks...
As usual the weather is sunny and 85 today. :)

Respond to the student in the same way you would any other. Becasue you have no official knowledge of an IEP or not, you have no choice.
That being said though... If you think that the student has some special needs AND you care enough to be willing to try to help... Make an effort to find out more about the student and contact the teacher / [arents to find out what methods of behavior assitance will work / and won't work. IT'S WORTH IT!!
Some states will not allow access to the IEP by a "bus driver" however.. you can still get information through your supervisor or direct from the teacher.

Therein is the problem.... Transportation Department Personnel have no knowledge until it is too late. So how can transportation be advised of students that have a special need in the classroom, but not necessarily on the bus.

It's funny you mentioned that Tropic Busing! Most Transportation people don't even know what IEP means! When we receive the IEP transportation info, it has the codes on the back of the form. With that code it can help the driver know what type of special resource the child needs. If the child needs a safety vest or a seatbelt...ect. This code also can tell us if the child needs a monitor for assistants.

When I receive a new student registration from the committee on special education, I take some time to implement transportation. Our industry has always been asked to perform the impossible immediately and miracles within a few hours. I think taking time to gather basic info about a new student is time well spent. Supervisors need to open up a conduit that will get info from the special ed people that will be useful to the driver and aide and will help safeguard the student. Do not rush to put a student on the bus "first thing tommorrow morning" after a 3:00 pm phone call. Look at the route, look at the other passengers, get the info on the new student and prevent problems as much as possible. IEP's are important documents that contain information vital to the safe transportation of students and the protection of other students and personnel. If an IEP should contain special transportation consideration, get it added. Do your homework on these students and adding new students will be less stressful for everyone. Getting help from the special education people is important. Make them aware of the safety concerns and they will be some of your greatest allies.

Folks, thanks for the information, but... Everything you have said is already being done. I have a great rapport with the Special Education Director and those students who have a transporation as a related service are being handled. That is not the problem... Is there a method for those students with an IEP in the classroom setting but not with transportation as related service still ID'd to the transporters? How does one found out until too late that Johnny is on a IEP for behavior (maybe on medication) but does not need special transportation. Rides the regular bus, regular bus stop, everything is regular until the driver attempts to discipline and all hell breaks looses because he unknowingly pushed the wrong buttons. Least restrictive is great, but how can the transportation department be advised of the students with no related transportation service?

How about having the form(s) redone so that there is a section for transportation, and have it indicated that the transportation department gets a copy of all IEP's.

You should be able to look up a student's record (or have someone do it for you) whenever there is a referral. You/they need to provide the driver not only address and phone # of student, but check their record needs to be checked to see if there is a sped designation. We're online in our office and always check student sped status.

Mr. Farr,
I have been wanting this to happen in my schools for many years now! It would make it so much easier if we could have access!

You should be able to have access. Ask your supervisor to assist you.
