We continue to deal with band instruments on our regular routes. Parents and Music Teachers don't see the problem. Space and safety is my issue. Is this a problem in other districts? How are you dealing with it?

They aren't allowed, except on our newer buses with the underneath baggage bins. Even those aren't very tall and won't accomodate larger instruments. Can't bring 'em aboard the bus unless they fit in a back pack.

under bus storage/lugage bins work well but they are expesive, and present a problem getting the instruments in and out at the students pick up and drop off. but work well for band trips.

The rule here is if they can't hold it in their lap, they get the instruments home or to school the best way they can.

The district that I was preveiosly in purchased an enclosed trailer, worked great, It was a small dist. and they still made it work through the music booster club and local donations, then a couple of different band familys with trucks took turns pulling it to the contest ect.
The district I'm in now, rule is that it has to fit in within the seat area and below seat back line and out of the aisle.

Large instruments which cannot be held by the student must be transported by other means.

I highly disagree with no instruments that don't fit in lap can't come on the bus! As a percussion instrument player, mostly the snare drum, That won't fit in a students lap and if the bus is the student's only way of getting to school, how on this green earth will the instruments get there? I know the BS about keep one at home and one at school but we can't all afford 2 instruments especally a $200 somthing dollar drum! In my home district the don't really care, they especally liek it though if it fits in a empty seat. Usually there is and empty seat on the bus use for instruments.

Band instruments are allowed on our buses,as long as the student doesn't start playing it and it isn't excessivly large (no baritones or tubas  ). And "Keep one at home" is pure BS,since drums are expensive and brass and woodwinds can be $1000+ dollars.

I'm going to have to double check on this one, but I'm pretty sure our school district doesn't have any specific policies in place regarding band instruments on the school buses.
I played Baritone Saxophone in junior high and high school, and I took it on the school bus lots of times. I'd stand the case up and set it next to the window. I'd sit next to it in the seat to make sure it didn't slide into the aisle. I never had a driver say anything to me about it, so I'm assuming most of our drivers don't give it a second thought unless it's sliding around or in the aisle.
For marching band trips, we had two trailers for our instruments, uniforms and other equipment. But on regular home-to-school runs, the students have always taken their instruments with them on the school bus.
And about keeping one at home and one at school, sometimes that isn't possible. I was lucky most of the time because one of the other school-owned Baritone Saxophones wasn't being used so I could have one at school and one at home, but that doesn't always happen. At a cost of $5000.00+, my dad wasn't about to buy me my own horn.

I think (I Bleed Yellow) means on the bus to and from school.
I know if the school bands in our area are transported they move the band equipment in a box truck.

I allow band instruments on my bus as long as they fit on the overhead racks
or in an underfloor luggage compartment.(my bus has the interior racks and the
underfloor bins)

Band instrument is fine on route buses as long as the instrument can be held in the students lap, dose not take up seat space of another student and dose not block the aisle. The student needs to be able to carry the instrument down the aisle with out bumping into other passengers. If the instrument is to large to fit into these minimum requirements then it becomes the responsibilities of the parent or the band instructor to transport the instrument to and from school.
