is there a regulation requiring or mandating the colors of school buses

It is mandatory for buses transporting school age and pre-school age children to and from school related events to be school bus yellow.

I believe that the yellow color of school buses is a federal recommendation. The individual states then adopt and adjust the recommendation to their liking. There are some states that don't require yellow school buses. On The School Bus Yard, I saw a photo of a purple school bus that only had the school bus sign as yellow. I believe that it was back in the 40's that a committee came together to discuss the school bus colors. They picked from a range of red to yellow. They picked what we have now as it was the most visible.

The national color wasn't fully mandated until 1974. Prior to that, Minnesota school buses were not the national school bus chrome yellow, they were Minnesota golden orange. In 1974, they became the last state to adopt the national color.

There's also a trend in Utah that school buses are being painted fluorescent neon green with all lettering black as well as trim.
I've also seen a few buses in WA painted this color also.
 Now I can control my OWN traffic - with my OWN 3M traffic signal! |

I guess they figure if they're making the school zone signs that fluorescent color for better visibility, then maybe it'd work with the school buses too. It would be interesting to see how that progresses.

I always said that they probaly start having some flouresnt neon colored School Buses. Ever since they started painting other yellow things to that color. I wonder if it works better?

I question the argument that changing the color will make the bus more visible.
A few years ago one of the local fire departments ordered one of their trucks that neon lime green color. It was involved in more accidents than all of the other fire trucks and ambulances combined.
The have since repainted the truck to fire engine red. It has not been in accident since then.
I think the same thing will happen if you change the color of a school bus from national school bus chrome yellow.
Ask any kid and they will tell you a fire engine is red and a school bus is yellow. Change the color and I don't think people will see the vehicle for what it is.

I tink that a school bus painted flourescent lime green would be less visible in low-light conditions (we have some of the signs on our roads) and they aren't as visible to be as a yellow sign would be. (Besides, I think that they look just plain UGLY). School buses are required to be School Bus Chrome Yellow (and in some cases lime green can be used I suppose) but activity buses can be painted white.

Do you have any pic's of these buses? I think it would be kind of neat to see one. Personally though, I think the color should remain National School Bus Crome because that is what the public is used to identifying with. I do like the look of the school buses that are painted different colors. Around here, the bowling alleys all operate old school buses and they are all painted different colors. I like the look of them and the neat paint schemes that they come up with.

I hope they stay as School Bus Yellow and I think they will. I think it will cause more problems. But I have always thought they might try it. Because some of our state Highway trucks or road constuction vehicles used to me yellow and they have gone to Lime Green color. I hope buses don;t do it. THey might try it.

When I lived in North Carolina several years ago, we used WHITE activity buses for field trips instead of the yellow school buses. They had interior luggage racks and were governed at 55 mph instead of the 35 mph for regular route buses.
913 is the next best thing to a Caddilac!

NC still uses the white activity buses. I thought that the regular buses were governed at 45 not 35. 35 seems awful low.

I also think that 35 MPH is very low for a regular route school bus.
The school buses in my area are governed at 65, even though the highways are 55 in my general area.
What if there was an emergancy and the bus had to take a highway?!?!?!? It would be EXTREMELY dangerous to place a 35 MPH school bus on a 55, 60,75 MPH... highway.

I called a friend of mine and asked them if it was still 35 and he said no, it was now 45 for route buses.
913 is the next best thing to a Caddilac!

Your buses are actually goverened at 35? Ours are set for 55. What do you guys do when you're on state routes? Or on a field trip?

I like the buses the color that they are, yellow. Yellow means caution. Our buses here are governed at 60 MPH. However, we can never exceed 45 MPH on a regular bus route, or 55 MPH on a field trip.

Yellow is not mandated federally as the color of school buses. There is actually no FMVSS requirement for school bus color. That is why you see white buses in NC and around the country. They are not yellow but still meet the "federal definition" of a school bus. Yellow has become the accepted color and is designated in the National Guidelines. All the States have adopted it as the required color.
Also, NC school buses are governed at 45 mph and activity buses are governed at 55 mph per their state specifications. |

I don't have any pictures unfortunately, but I did see a whole fleet of school buses that were painted this color on the news once.
I agree, though, School buses should remain NSBCY because they've been like that since the 30s, and there's no need to really change anything. Like I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
