This is pointed more towards the bus drivers and transportation directors and not towards bus enthusiasts....
If a student was try to try to board your bus and he/she was not a student in the school district and he/she had a note from his/her parent saying that he/she was wanting to try out the school district..but he/she didn't have a note from the proper school authority saying that was alright, would you allow him/her to ride your bus. That situation presented itself today in the Jonathan Alder School District in Plain City, Ohio today.

No way...if there was an accident all of the liability would fall on the bus company.

On my middle School Route I road. Several times we had students try to board that had a note from a parent not a School Offical. Our driver said I am sorry I am not able to Transport you because I do not have a note from the Proper Official. They are not allowed to let any one board there bus they have been notifed by the proper official or has a note from an official.

Nope.
If the student were just visiting for the day with another student, than the visiting student would have a slip from the office, it wouldn't be directly for the bus driver, it is for the visiting student to show the teachers, and that is good enough for the bus. Most of the time when there is a student visiting, they usually get a ride to school, and do not ride the bus.

Situations like this should always be cleared with the school first. Drivers usually have no authority to make these decisions, but they have all the liability if something goes wrong.

That's what I thought. The student got a ride (by car) to school but somehow, he boarded the same bus in the afternoon. There was a lot of radio chaos, but the driver said this would be the only time she would drive him.

Just to confirm what the Captain and others have stated. I've been advised by my superintendant that there are liability issues involved in allowing non-district residents on our buses. This applies to potential chaparones on a field trip, as well as friends of students that want to go home with them for a sleepover. The latter request comes in a lot from parochial and private school students. LM

I was told later on that the student lives in my school district is a registered student of a neighboring school district (new student) and was wanting to decide to go to our district or stay in his district so yesterday was a trial visit...would that make any difference?

I wouldn't think that makes any difference. The student is still a non-district student (and will be if and until he registers in your district).
