Does anyone have a formal policy against video games such as Game Boy's on their district school buses? If you do have such a policy, how do you enforce it? Any other thoughts for or against such a policy would be helpful, as well, thanks.

I'm not sure if you were perhaps talking about a district wide policy, but the policy on my bus is if I catch you with one I get to keep it. Of course, I would give it to the parents, but I'm not telling the kids that. I made this policy because the kids were stealing from each other and fighting about them. I also "collect" pokemon and digimon cards for the same reasons.

Yes, there are school-level policies in our school district prohibiting cd/radio players, video games, skateboards, Pokeman and other items on the buses and at school.
Some schools allow their bus drivers leadway with Radio/cd players and video games, especially with MS and HS students. The expectation here is that the device must not interfere with the bus in any way, as determined by the bus driver. I think without exception, whatever use is agreed to, one or two students will violate that expectation. The device is confiscated and turned over to the office. The child usually can not retrieve the item from the office -- the child's parent must come to the school and pick the item up. (jk)

We aren't supposed to have cell phones,Pokemon,GameBoys,CD Players,or whatever.(In fact,a bunch of cell phones were taken today in school).The bsu drivers don't really care about any of that,unless they are causing pro blems.

Our Schools aren't suppose to hae CD player Tape,Cell phones and etc. Most drivers don't care and pretend they don't see it. My middle School Driver let us have them because we where so good but she asked permission first and they granteded it by saying they better never see anyone with one in the building or they will have to change there rule.

Our policy for students prohibits the use of all electronic devices while on board any school bus or while on any district field trip. Plain and simple.

Individual schools have their own policies. Because the high school administrators were spending too much time dealing with stolen cell phones, pagers, Walk Man, and the like, they are no longer permitted on campus. The kids seem to get away with carrying these items in their backpacks, though.
Some elementary schools ban game Boys, Pok e Mon and other such stuff for the same reason.

I see no reason a student should not be allowed to have a walkman with headphones-it keeps them quiet and they don't cause problems. Video games that make noise are another matter (if there was an emergency on the bus I think chances are that the kid would notice headphones or not). Besides if they are in the back of the bus the driver might never notice anyway (as I said in an earlier forum some drivers never speak to their high school students except when giving a firedrill). The items are prohibited in school, but there is no policy in our district for the buses.
Getting them there is the first-and the easiest/hardest-part. |

As for Game Boy's I let them play them on my bus these are the rules no sound and if it causes problems they lose the right to have then. so far it's good now for pokemon card's no it causes problems cell phones are on the trip buses but not on the route buses and for skate broads that is on the driver if they well let then or not. When I was still driving full time, and not in the office, I used to threaten to confiscate ANYTHING that caused an argument or debate amongst the students. I not only threatened to confiscate the item, but to sell it on eBay, and if they wanted it back they would have to bid on it. All proceeds were to benefit the "Keep the Bus Driver Sane" fund.
While there obviously is no such fund, and I would never sell their toys, I had some gullible students who believed me! Problem solved.

This reminds me of a conversation I had one day with some folks who were adamant about students not having any type of electronic device on the bus. The rationale was the students who were using them would not be as alert and not be paying attention to the driver. I then asked what a driver was supposed to do if a student fell asleep or was reading a book. These really smart people said it was ok if a student fell asleep or was reading a book. When I asked what was the difference between a student sleeping or a student playing with a game-boy as to being alert and paying attention, I got the 1000 mile stare. As to a policy, I do not have one. In fact, if a game boy keeps the student quiet and not disrupting the bus, then what the heck, let them play. Bus rides can be long and hot where I am located, if a game boy or a cd player keeps the students from being a problem, then I am all for it.

In Norman the school board banned skate boards on the bus. However, they did not extend the banned to the schools.
Last year I had some problems with pokieman cards. I took it up with the School princaple and she just decided to banned them from school.
I have seen an increase in the use of handheld CD players with headphones. The kids quitely listen to them and are quite.
If it keeps them quite I am happy,
My position is that if something is banned from the bus it should likewise be banned from school otherwise you send a mixed message to the kids.
