2004 IC RE 200 - T444E 210 HP - MD-3060

About once a month for the past four months, bus will start to blow massive white smoke from tailpipe and then loose power. No warning lights on the dash, gauges all read perfectly. Again, this only happens once a month. After bus is shut off and allowed to rest for about 20 minutes, it runs just fine.

This problem also only occurs during the afternoon runs, and only when its really warm out. The four times this problem has occured, the weather was clear, sunny, and over 85 degrees. Though keep in the mind, the bus showed no signs of overheating.

Our garage has done repeated testing and dyno work and nothing wrong has been found. Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think I would put a fuel pressure guaage on it so it could be checked immediately when the problem occurs.

Sounds like the exhaust back pressure valve is sticking closed. Could be in the valve itself, a bad ebp sensor, Bad wiring, or a plugged sensor tube.

You can trouble shoot I easily enough by disconnecting the flapper and wiring it open for the afternoon run. If you are in a cold climate you do not want to leave it disconnected though.

Oh yeah, that will cause a smoke show and low power, should also create a noticeable change in the tone of exhaust.
Also check the ebp sensor tube for being rusted and broken.
