We have a salesman selling Silverback brake parts. He says it is ok to reuse the brake drums. What is your school policy on this?

| As long as the drums will still be in spec by the time it will need relined, then yes reuse them. In other words, if the drums are more than half worn after one set of lining, REPLACE. The chance of getting on the 6 oclock news is not worth it. |

| By the time you pay to have the drums trued to fit the new shoes, you could have most of the cost to get new drums. And as Yellowbusjoe says the liability is not worth it. |

I find that the drums for the 16 1/2 x 7 Rockwells are so close to over spec by the time the shoes are gone that it's not worth messing with them.
Ditto on the six o'clock news. |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it.
If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway.

| If you have your own equipment to turn them on your own its not bad. I would have a set already done, or a new set to go on the bus then turn them in my spare time. As stated above alot of them were too close to min spec to even think about re-using. If you have to send them out it just not worth it most machine shops charge $35-45 for a big drum. At the time I was buying new ones for about $100. |

| And since the "arch" on your new brake shoes won't fit the oversize drums properly, they won't last as long as they would on new drums. |

| anybody ever work on the old Mercedes trucks? They had different brake linings for the drums as they were cut. you would measure the drums, and get the right linings according to the drum spec. Best of all was the linings came loose, you had to put them on the shoe cores. I really dont miss them. |
