So in an effort to save money they are transfering inspection responsability from the government paid state patrol to government paid school districts? Ya that makes sense. |

If all the districts kept up on the maintainance like they were supposed to, these inspections wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately, some districts would fail to keep up on their fleets if they aren't worried about that annual inspection. This puts all the liability on the districts themselves. |

| Here's my question. What exactly do these state guys do when they inspect your buses? In Illinois we have to take our buses to an approved inspection lane and pay to have them look it over and put a sticker on it every 6 months. I am required to check the brakes and make sure everything is to factory specs. and sign a report to turn into the lane. Is that anything like what you are doing? |

I think we are headed that direction here. They have cut the number of DOT officers here in half. We have inspections ever 6 months, we take ours to the school garage down the street. If I am adding a couple buses to the route an officer will come here and inspect them. They know that I keep my fleet in shape and won't have to come back.
I do however feel that if "We" inspect our own that ASE or some sort of certification should be required. |

| I drive for a private bus company Our buses our poorly maintained bad tires, fluid leaks, damaged seats, and numerous other maintenance issues. We even have buses that have been red tagged and which should not even be on the road. Even though the DOT Inspections our a joke as I have watched them since I was in high school and they don't find the major problems and after there gone even red tagged buses take kids home. Lets put it this way the dot officer is in a hurry and just dose a quick inspection missing lots. We need some sort of inspection to force private contractors to maintain there buses. I would like to see a fully licensed mechanic inspect the buses with a bus having a road test every 2 years and more thorough inspections when a bus hits 10 years |

All of the states are facing these budget issues. Maine went from twice yearly bus inspections to annual and to when we get to it............ we went 18 months on this last one and they called the afternoon before simply because it was going to rain and they knew they could do ours indoors.
Dunno when we'll see them again. |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it. If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway. Pullin' wrenches for 45 years. |

Been asking suppliers who travel between districts to get more info on MSP school bus inspections. No one seems to know much, but I did get this: Michigan had 11 Bus Inspectors but through retirement and resignation there are now 4 inspectors. Did a google search and found a document, dated today, from the Michigan Department of Education. HF Now that I have read this document, I wonder, "Who dreamed this up?" Looks like a report card. Some of this is useless as all full time folk at our district do lots more than our job title would indicate. http://www.eup.k12.mi.us/60891009292019/lib/60891009292019/Appendix_C1_-_MI_Model_Maint_Program.pdf |

My Fleet? (6) 93/99 IH 3800 Thomas and Blue Bird, Hydraulic Brakes, Manual and Auto Trans, (10) 00/06 FS65 Thomas Air Brake and Auto Trans, (2) 06 C2 Thomas and (2) 09/10 IC CE 300, Plus 3 more from another District |
