I did a service on a 2006 IC with a vt365. When I pulled the drain plug it had an unusual amount of fine metal fur on the magnet. I usually see nothing so this sparked interest. I cut the oil filter open and found the pleats to have a glittery look to them . The bus did have the engine replaced at 15000 miles for a bad cam lobe and now the bus has 95,000 on it. It will be going out of warranty soon so I took it to the dealer to at least get a case file started on it in case they decide to ignore the issue. I also sent an oil sample and the filter media for them to inspect. I did notice when driving it when I let off and slow down I can hear what sounds like a push rod clatter /snapping noise. Its not loud and can only be heard easily when the engine is in a no fuel situation while decelerating. It still runs fine so I guess we shall see what the dealer wants to do with it. Maybe Im just being nitpicky but metal shavings on drain plugs is not very common on our engines. im just wondering if anybody else has seen this and the engine run a long time while making metal.

We have 22 of these engines and have only lost one. (Many running problems though). It developed an odd intermittent miss at an idle which turned out to be a failed roller lifter/cam lobe like you mentioned. Otherwise, ours all have well in excess of 100,000 with no lower end troubles. My bet is in the lifter/cam area like you mentioned. An appropriate thing to do might be to donate it to the Navy for a boat anchor! Ya gotta keep a sense of humor with these things!

Maybe I lead a charmed life, we have one in a 2004 Ford E450 that has 165,000 miles on it and has only needed 2 EGR valves and one turbo, put 8,000 miles on it in the last 6 weeks. We had such good luck with it that we bought a 2008 53 passenger bus with a one and its so far also been troublefree.
Why yes, the ORIGinal CHARGER is a Fastback |

dealer pulled the pan and valve covers and admitted there is too much metal being made but couldnt find the obvious culprit. They advised driving it till it failed. Now thats customer support. I hope it doesnt give up the ghost on a railroad track or leave a bunch of kids stranded in the middle of nowhere at 20 below zero.

I changed the oil again .No metal on the drain plug magnet but the filter was still covered with glitter but about half as much as the first time. Must have just eaten up some parts but only the weak ones.
