What are the most common behavior problems associated with middle-school routes and what methods can be used to control them?
What are the roles of drivers, parents and administrators in making troublesome middle-school routes more manageable?
What's the best plan for preventing these routes from getting out of control? Does it make use of intervention techniques, training topics or innovative strategies?

Well I am in middle school,and I think we have the least problems(on the bus I ride)but I don't know about the other buses.It seems to me that the biggest problem is cussing and fighting over stuff.One of the seats has been broken twice by it.I think the best way to deal with it is to take the problematic students to office at the appropriate school(unless very violent,then to the nearest school).

Inappropriate language, uncooperative attitudes, and lack of respect for themselves and others are the thing biggies in my book.
The most successful way to I have found to deal with the middle school/junior high age student is to always treat each student as an individual with value. Never, ever put them into a position where they will lose face in front of their peers. Always limit their choices so that whatever they choose the bahavior will be what you want. Never, ever threaten something you can't follow through with in a timely fashion.
The most important thing the adults can do is to make sure the students understand that no matter how they feel about it, the bus driver is in charge on the bus. If the students ever get the idea they can ride roughshod over the driver, the driver will never be in control.
In so many districts, routes are assigned by seniority. Senior drivers, unless they aren't quite bright, rarely will choose a route that is difficult. The result is usually a new driver is forced off into the deep end. The wonder of it all is how few actually don't make it. But it would be much more profitable for all involved if the new driver, if they have to take the problem route were given better tools to do the job. Tools like proactive techniques to prevent some of the common mistakes happening would be a great boon. Also, if the new driver could be mentored by a senior driver who has a proven ability in the area of student management the new driver would have a better chance to survive successfully.
As we have seen on this and other forums, time and again, when routes are troublesome the common denominator seems to be lack of support from the schools and the supervisor.
The driver has to be in charge on the bus. The students have to know they will be held liable for their actions and they will have consequences for negative behavior. If the driver is not in charge, the problem route will always be a problem route.

Good responsces, but what makes middle school worse is the kid's bodies have grown to almost adult size. They are all somewhere in puberty (pre post mid whatever) and have not adjusted to new body chemistry. Their minds have not matured; nothing matters more than the imediate now. If a pre-k acts out we search for a solution. If a middle schooler acts out let's hang the duffer. We see the middle schooler as a small annoying adult.
The biggest help to middle school drivers would be the support of the school office. Too often the school seems to feel if they can put up with it for six hours the bus driver should be able to stand 20 to 30 min. I don't know how to get around this attitude, but to keep stressing that it is a safty -- not an ambiance -- thing. -love dave

Most of them do a bunch of immature crap.This one student in my class does nothing but improperly sit on his desk,drive me insane,talk,put his rear end in people's faces,go to sleep,and other crap like that.
He's already gotten close to two days ISS and he's only been here for about six weeks.
Several middle schoolers that ride the bus pick on people(this one in paticular dips,spits it in my hair,flicks people in the ear,and other wise tortures people.)and several other people do this like that as well as tear up seats and put trash in the seats.Thank goodness it's winter break time.
