Now that we have had drug & alcohol testing for many years, has anyone come across a situation that required your drug policy to be revised, or at least reviewed?

We use a random test for all employees with a CDL. Names are computer generated completely at random. It's a little strange because some names will come up two or three times and some hardly ever come up for testing, but I guess thats why it's called "random". Seems to work for us. We have caught a few that were positive, and thats the idea. Joe

I am not sure exactly what you mean when you talk about a situation that might make one want to change the policy.
We have a zero tolerance policy. I forsee no reason to ever change that policy. When you are transporting people you have an obligation to do your best. When you are transporting little people you are legally charged with a higher obligation.
I cannot imagine any situation in which I would want to change a zero tolerance policy.

Mark, a situation arose in which a driver was tested and the test showed Chromate in her system. She made a very strong case to the school administration that the trace was due to Chromium Picolinate (?), a legal weight loss/metabolism additive. Unfortunately, she gave the MRO involved an attitude, and was required to go through training in a substance abuse program. Was it a valid assertion on her part? Depends who you ask. The MRO states it was an adulteration..the employee, who up to now has had a good record, and displayed no suspicious behavior, swears that it was the result of an off-the-counter weight loss product. One thing for sure, there is defitely a barn door that must be shut, policy-wise..I'm looking for other people's insights. LM

The Feds prescribe certain procedures/activities which cannot be altered. On the local level our leaders have lattitude to rehab or release. In our case, it is "zero tolerance," which is consistent with the way our Board od Ed deals with students. I do not see this changing for us.
