School incidents have some wondering who's in charge

By Karen Shugart, Staff Writer

The Malcon Telegraph
GEORGIA - Last month, Bibb County schools' hearing officers decided that a 13-year-old Rutland Middle School student had twisted his teacher's arm.

His punishment? An assignment to Neel Academy for the rest of the semester - in effect, a five-week stint at the alternative school for trying to hurt a teacher.

Some teachers and school board members point to such punishments as examples of leniency that can not only drive teachers to the breaking point but also let students know who's really in charge.

And it isn't the credentialed adult in front of the classroom.

"We can't continue to carry on this way," school board member Terry Tripp said. "The message is out in the student body that they're the ones with the power."

Robinson said the choice comes down to what role teachers play in students' lives.

"You can't expect teachers to teach and parent children," Robinson said. "We're becoming surrogate parents. The public has to decide whether they want teachers to teach. If they're going to teach, then the child needs to act right, or they need to be taken out (of the classroom)."

Most teachers, Swint said, come to the profession concerned about more than collecting a paycheck.

"They can make more money somewhere else," Swint said. "They start out caring, really caring about their students."
