This happened in our city recently. Not school bus related, but a high profile discipline case. About time something was done!

CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Student No. 1. Expelled.
Someone gasped. Comforting hands reached out to the shoulders of several Western Branch High School boys in the School Board chambers.
Student No. 2. Expelled.
Students 3, 4 and 5. Expelled.
The board unanimously upheld the expulsions early Tuesday morning of five students ages 16 and 17 for their parts in the physical hazing of three younger students at the beginning of the school year. The board also overrode the superintendent’s recommendation and voted unanimously to allow them to continue schooling through other means.
The boys remained stoic. Female schoolmates cried. Parents vented words of shock and anger.

I'm seldom in agreement with such a harsh response. After reading the story I believe the kids and their parents learned nothing but how to make excuses for their children acting out such horrific behavior toward other students. For some years the school boards made excuses for kids malbehavior and pandered to their parents excuses for the malbehavior. No change - even worse hazings. Abduction is very serious and yet the parents continue to make excuses for the crimes their kids committed. If the message is "Do this thing and this will happen to you'" then the kids involved in this case are not being used as examples, but a strong warning to any kids thinking about continuing the malbehavior outside the bounds of decency. I'm in full support of the position and the punishment leveled by that school board, even though it is likely the board's position will change later down the road. Then again, a look at the Virginian-Pilot's poll may help sustain those suspensions. (jk)

Oh, this was on TV and everything! Really put Chesapeake on the map this time!! I am surprised that CNN did not get a hold of it as well. What really angers me is that in past stories, things were said that these were good kids who never got into any trouble before. What had the same people said if the ones expelled were kids who had been in trouble before? The tables would have turned, then! I am now waiting to see if the parents of the victims decide to do a civil lawsuit. Human waste carries bacteria and pathogens, etc and God forbid one of those kids could have died. And to think that I used to use a glove just to apply a band aid to one of my kids' knees. The school is responsible for all students' safety even when they leave school grounds till they get home. These parents were probably frantic when their kids did not get off their buses that day too. Maybe this will be an example to all about unacceptable behavior. I also think that the decision was political as well to keep the school board in the good graces of the citizens. |

Interesting. In some school districts a bus driver would be disciplined, even face termination, for placing a band aid on a child's leg - especially were it a male doing this to a female child. And hug a kid? In some schools Bus drivers are strangers and must not do that. We've come a long way since the age of political correctness has taken over.
Regardless, what the kids did in this thread's story is unacceptable in any age. (jk)

JK,
You are exactly right. What they did was wrong, regardless of what economic "class" they came from. Our city is growing like crazy and we have overcrowded schools. The schools have a mix of many economic classes as well. I heard about one of the kids being an "A" student who is going to go to college. He should know better. And if it had been a "flunky" it would be different, expell him?
Just like on the bus, rules are rules. In school, rules are rules and I am go glad that the rules were enforced in this case. A lot of rules go unenforced. I just wonder what happened to the group that was waiting in the field who threw all this crap at this poor kids. It may have started out many years as innocent fun with lipstick on the face and maybe water balloons, but as the years went on it got worse. |
