JERSEYVILLE -- A school bus driver who killed a bicyclist during an off-duty accident has been fired after the state yanked her motorist privileges.

I can maintain little or no sympathy for school bus driver Davis. Falling asleep at the wheel is preventable and loosing her license for a period of time is appropriate because her careless act resulted in a death.

Regardless, the behavior of the state and school board is nothing short of a kangaroo court. They acted out, not for safety reasons, but for their attempt at political gain and self puffery.

What Davis did was preventable and an accident - a death resulted. What the Secretary of State's Office and the school board did was done with eyes wide open and was preventable in the manner in which it unfolded - They killed a good person's career unecessarily. (jk)

Note: I like this particular paper. They often include comments following the story. Here's a few I found interesting, especially the one from a former student that rode Davis's bus:

Name: Confused Again

Did Ms Davis do this on purpose? Was she Drunk? Was she on Drugs? Or was this an accident. This lady has been fired, tried and hung out to dry for an accident. It's as if no one else has ever had an accident. I do not know Ms. Davis but my prayers are with her. I'm sure she has beat herself up enough about what has happened and really does not need everyone to belittle her. I know she is not the only one who has ever made a mistake. It sounds like there are a lot of people out there who believe they can walk on water.

Name: Former Student

Sarah Davis was my bus driver for several years when I was a student in the Jersey Community School District. Never once did I feel unsafe with Sarah behind the wheel. While I sympathize with the woman who lost her daughter, this was a tragic accident. Filing a civil suit against Sarah and demanding venegance will not bring her daughter back. This woman needs counseling to deal with this tragedy.

Name: Former Jersey County Resident
Date: Sep, 17 2003
This is Jersey County at its finest. The ACCIDENT happened in May and the Board decides to fire her after the school year started. Oh that is right, the Board takes the summer off and doesn't read the paper. This whole thing is ridiculious. I can't wait to see the school board's judgement when they hire Ms. Davis's replacement. I am sure the parents that brought this to the Board's attention are patting themselves on the back. Bravo to you all. I can't wait until I am reading about the inexperienced bus driver that they hire as the replacement causing an accident or your personal tragedy and the lynch mob coming after you for an ACCIDENT.

This is going to guarantee the safety of your children? Get real. To replace an experienced bus driver with an inexperienced one is not going to improve the safety of your children. It was an unfortunate incident, falling asleep or nodding off at the wheel, that could happened and probably has happened to most drivers, but without the unfortunate results. I think the parents of Elsah have a false sense of security with the removal of Mrs. Davis from her position. I'll pray for your souls.

Once the license is suspended that makes your school bus certification void at least in California. The drivers termination would be automatic after that so what was the purpose of the board to vote on terminating the driver.

Secondly what has been the standard practice for suspending a drivers license by the state in simular cases?
