CLINTON - School bus drivers in Sampson County have been given cell phones and pagers to use for emergencies.

Leslie Dudley, the system's transportation supervisor, said the drivers received the phones and pagers Aug. 4, two days before classes started.

National Network Communications in Princeton is equipping the system's 138 buses, as well as providing the service.

The county pays $7 a month per phone and $9.95 per pager, Superintendent Gary Weeks said. Drivers will be able to call the transportation office, the school and 911, he said.

"The Board of Education saw fit to put cell phones on all of the school buses for safety reasons," Weeks said.
