Just read the "stop the chop" entry to case studies in this months SBF mag and was wondering who else has used the stuff? I need something like this for my bus tires as it is a 150 mile round trip to have my tires balanced. Man hours and fuel needed to get mine balanced alone should offset the cost of the product I would think. If the stuff works half as good as all the write ups I have read about while researching then it may solve a lot of my problems. Tell me/us your findings good or bad. Thanks

Equal does work to some extent. There are a couple of problems that I did not like when I tried it. 1) Every time you stop the stuff falls to the bottom so when you start again it takes a little while for the wheel to get balanced again. 2) It is a mess to clean out of the tire if you do your own tire dismounting and mounting. If you run it in tubes the tube is junk after the tire is dismounted due to no way to get it out. 3) Since it falls to the bottom each time you stop, drivers will say they have an inbalance at low speeds. If you forget which tires you put it in then try to weight balance the tire, you will make it worse. It would work best in over the road applications. I do not recommend it for stop and go. Brad

Hello-
Brad is right on. We also tried Equal and one of the things we noticed was that not only did you have to be careful about the valve stem, but in order to get a TRUE air pressure check, you had to give the tire a shot of air to clear the valve stem out, then check the air pressure. I'm probably whining, but that became tedious after a while. In a related topic, several tire dealers around here [Northeast Ohio] only use Equal. They won't spend the big dollars necessary to buy and maintain wheel balancing equipment. They also say the cost of labor and workman compensation claims for working in that area are too expensive.

I have been useing Equal for about ten years now. I only have had issues a couple of times and that turned out to be tire defects and not the Equal causing the problem. If i had a flat I just took a shop vac and cleaned it out. As far as tubes who runs tubes anymore. At low speed you don't need to ballance anyway because the forces on the tire are not that much untill You get over 40 mph.

In my opinion Equal is the best stuff out there for tire balance. I have a small fleet of about 20 54 passenger buses, and they are all Equal balanced. It is a little messy on the dismount, but I wash the wheels off and blow them dry. When i buy the Equal my tire guy gives me the proper valve cores, and the yellow sleeves to go on the valve stems. In the 8 years that I have been using it I have never had any problems.

Exactly why we don't use it. Ok for the long haul though. |

I've had some of the same bad experiences with equal in bus tires as stated above, but use to use it all the time in over the road trucks seem to work great for them

Its in the steer tires on my buses, because I put it there when I changed them. I don't see the need to put it in the rear tires.

In addition to Brad's comments I would add some rim and tire combinations will be so far out of balance Equal won't work properly ( unless the tire is dismounted and turned on the rim to even out the imbalance).<p> Scott
