Drivers are eligible for a safety bonus paid at the end of the school year. Eligibility is based on attendance, driving record (no accidents) and safety meeting attendance.
Drivers qualify monthly by working all of their routes and attending the safety meeting but must not have a preventable accident at any time during the year. The maximum bonus is $360.

Bonuses for perfect attendance, and no preventable accidents. We also do a lot of morale-booster stuff to show the drivers we appreciate them.

One of our yards has posted in the office the number of preventable accidents from the last month for each yard. This is posted in the yard with the least at-faults, with a note saying congratulations on a safe month.

Just last week we had a day with really bad roads, when a neighboring bus company had 4 major accidents in one morning. Our buses didn't have a single one that day, so the president of the company wrote a letter to all the drivers thanking them for a job well done.

Doing a good job unfortionately goes unseen in my department. Not a sole mentions what you do unless you don't do it. It is like wetting your pants in a dark suit. it gives you a warm feeling and nobody notices it.

Just had a employee survey focus group meeting. It was suggested that management pass out raffle tickets when employees deserve recognition. Then once a month hold a raffle at the safety meeting

We have a perfomance plus here, it is based on attendance and safety meetings and being accident free and can be as much as $550.00 per year.

Staff members can earn a movie and dinner for no time missed in two month segments.
We pass out eveything from pins, tokeeping their bus parked in the garage for 1-7 nights in the winter.
We have a Bravo! award which staff members nominates other staff members for this hospitality award.
clean bus notices
pre-trip awareness awards
post "good job to everyone today" notices
dress up at Halloween
Board of Education recognizes transportation staff members each year in March with notes, Board letter, Cheese & crackers trays, fruit trays, chips, veggies etc.
Board recognizes staff members when they place in the county roadeo, state police ratings, etc
Department management brings in, at times, donuts, bagals, muffins and "opens" the coffee pot just "because"
Management passes out birthday cards to each staff member once a month signed by each supervisor, director and secretary.
We have a cookout once a year with hot dogs, burgers, chicken and yes, even steak! Cost ..nothing , our soft drink machine pays for it.
We pass out flowers whenever a staff member is in the hospital for more than 1 day
All staff members with more than 1 year has at least one award.
Driving staff has even gave management awards
Awards does not make the department, people working together makes the department. Awards are just a way of a morale booster, eventhough I believe they are necessary they cannot become a tool that will mean nothing after a period of time.
I believe staff wants management to show real caring about them, passing out awards will not show that. You as management has to earn that right from staff.

So do we. Parking in the garage does not mean 7 nights in a row. It means when we can fit them in, and we do. It might take a few days but they really like Fridays and that is the day we clean the garage and we do not want any down buses for Monday Morning. There is not too much repairs that take more than 1 1/2 days to repair if you keep your buses on a maintenance schedule and drivers do their inspections.

We have the standard incentive program, do your job & get paid. We're lucky the Board gives us that much. I'm of the belief that monetary rewards are rare in the public school sector. The Board budget is voted on by the taxpayers in NJ, if they started giving awards for people to do their jobs, they'd be drawn & quartered at the polls.
