Hi, I'm Antony, a parent in London, England! We don't have your great system of school buses here and travel for kids can be really tough. Can anyone kindly inform me how your system with the yellow busesin the US works? Who pays? - the school, local governnment/taxes,parents? Here it seems to be too expensive for anyone to organize. Thanks!

Most often, the buses are payed for with the school budget, which comes from the government and taxes. Sometimes you will encounter a school district that has a system of tution for riding the buses, but those are rare and I do not recommend them. As for how the system works, in most cases (remember, there always special exceptions) the buses leave the compound in the morning, drive the routes picking children up at either their house or a designated bus stop, they drop them off at school, and then the buses go back to the compound. Afterwards, they do it in the opposite to take the children home. The most common law is that ALL cars must stop (even emergency vehicles, in the State of Michigan) when the school buses' red lights are flashing with the stop arm extended. I know there are school buses being introduced in teh UK now, but I am unaware if that law was adopted. Hope this helps! I'm sure more people could elaborate.

Hey London, Welcome to the best forum for School Bus Info.
Most Schools have a mileage limitation for distances traveled to the nearest district school to be eligible for Transportation. For instance in our community grades k - 6
need to be over 2 miles from school for bus services. There is no limit for all other grades and they are required to get to school on their own. Towns may elect to set up their own guidelines as they see fit.
Most transportation systems are provided through the school budget collected from local taxes and some government subsidies.
You might want to send for a copy of school bus laws and regulations for requirements governing our industry.
