I am a university student writing a research paper for a school report. What are a bus company's biggest expenses? Insurance? Fuel? Drivers? What are some other major expenses - what is an approximate percentage breakdown?

I'm sure there are variations from district to district and state to state. For instance, we are a very large district and because the premiums for our 17,000,000 annual mile bus fleet would be astronomic, it makes sense for us to be self-insured. Annual budget percentages follow:
1. Payroll (includes benefits)-85%
2. Fuel - 3%
3. Parts (includes tires) - 3%
4. the remaining 9% covers travel, two way radios, misc. repairs not done in house, computers and related expenses, including GPS, etc.
Hope this helps.
Joe
