An idea came to me. Why not have a special class on school bus safty for students who receive referals for misconduct on school buses.
I would have it on saturdays with 10 to 12 students per class. Each class made of students who broke the same rule. A parent would have to accompany the child. Cost would be 10 to 25 dollars a pair(to make the teacher happy}. Time would be 2 to 4 hours. General bus safty would be taught with special attention on what got the class in trouble.
Any other ideas or coments welcome. Does any distict currently do this? Has this idea failed in your district?

While I am not against consequences for students that break the rules...there are things that would have to be taken into consideration.
What school board is going to adopt this enormous burden of tracking...teaching and taking in money.
Who wants to give up a saturday to teach this class?
Do you think the parent would really buy into being there with the student.
Here in California we spend more time working with drivers and in depth student management training. It seems to work prety well. At our District, if a student breaks a rule they are suspended from riding the bus. Riding the bus is a provledge in California so our board policy states that you have to display appropriate conduct or lose the service.

You know this sounds like a great idea! If the person breaks the law in their car they have to go to a one day class on traffic safety, why not try this with students on the School Bus!

Okay, Great idea. The only problem I see is the charge and then there is the fact that nobody will want to give up their Saturday. How about the teachers be responsible for it or even the principle or vice principle. In most districts we as drivers are not permitted to make the disciplinary call so should it not be the person that makes this call the one whom teaches the class? Do the teachers at Saturday school get paid for that time? Would this not fall under the same conditions? I think it could work if the administration would be in agreement for it.

I'd give up a Sat. to teach the class, that is, if I got (most of) the money collected. I understand that some of it would go to pay the lights and A/C....

If your Transportation Department has a safety manager, get them to teach the class! Besides most of your schools have all kinds of activities on Saturdays, why not a required safety class?

Hey Dave!
I like your idea.
In a similar direction, my "brain-storm" this year was to encourage our system to begin a little bus safety class offering for all the classes k-3 in our county using the little "Be Cool" video, the coloring sheet, and about a half-hour of a combination of danger zone safety and bus behavior lesson plan.
Thought it'd be neat doing this with transportation people instead of their regular teachers, and using the bus as a "classroom" for some of the instruction.
Even went so far as to present the written proposal and lesson plan through our director to the system for approval and funding. Thought a little about simply doing it as a "volunteer" but it would take far too much time, and besides, something so important needs the legitimacy of being an official FUNDED initiative, right?
I just recently found out it didn't get the go ahead for $$ reasons. This and having a tragic student death in a neighboring county only a few weeks ago. . . and the experience of Aleana's terrible accident not too far down the road last year!
Makes you wonder what they're thinking. . .
God help us.

Must be we do such a great job over all that the powers that be just assume the kids are always safe on our buses.
They also assume we will do alot of things on our own time to make things safer.
we have trouble finding time to do our Bus Evac drills without our kids being penalized for being marked late for school.
Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to.

You mean to say that Bus Evac drills are not mandatory? We have to have Bus Evac drills once if not twice a year!
