With all of the scheduling problems this time of year with extra trips, athletics, etc., why can't athletic directors and conferences schedule more activities around regular home/school service? For example, one of my locations has 8 route buses with 2 spares. On two days this spring, there are FIVE trips scheduled to leave school before routes are completed in the afternoon! I know this happens everywhere, but WHY? Drivers are hard enough to come by just to cover routes. With all of the scheduling problems related to transportation, I think conferences and athletic directors should plan better and work together to make things easier for district transportation folks. Getting children home is and should be the first priority. Doubling up routes, doing extra runs and running routes late often occur in these situations. What do you think? Can we/should we pressure other folks to use some common sense when planning these extra activities?

Don't let them tell you when they want a bus, you tell them when you'll provide a bus. Start by telling them when the regular routes are, and then if they still need a late bus, give them one or two times that they can all use. The kids can wait if they have to.
We ran into this problem at my former high school.
The way we solved it was with 2 late buses...Monday/Thursday ("activity days") we had a 4:30 late bus, and Monday thru Thursday, we had a 6:00 sports bus. Dismissal was at 2:15, and the late buses always came right at the end of their routes. A lot of times, activities were over by 3, and I remember waiting for the bus many times.
The problem we had with the buses was that a lot of students still had a long way to go home from the school (lived in the opposite direction from the late bus) or the bus stop. Often, the late bus would get the students who lived half an hour away to somewhere more convenient for their parents to pick them up.

Getting kids to and from school IS the first priority! Don't let coaches/athletic directors make your scheduling decisions for you! Tell them WHEN your buses are available, and schedule accordingly.

Most athletic trips when done with in-house
transportation will save the budget tremendously. By sitting down with your athletic director and showing them how much you can save their transportation budget by simply re-scheduling should convince them.
With budget deficits to meet this year by all school depts. a 1/2 hour change in events is minimal for what they will save..

Sherm poses an excellent question... More consideration should be given to the transportation operation and the athletic directors should ask for our input. I know this will probably not happen in my District, especially since they won't even listen to me now when I want to stagger the bell times for the schools so we can operate more efficiently. We do the best we can with the time parameters which we must follow, but we could do so much more if the school administrators would listen to us. This is an ongoing struggle...
