Bus Boss: You can get a hundred different answers on this question. For private field trip purposes, I charge the user - typically a teacher or building principal - the hourly rate of a driver, plus a percentage that reflects current variable employment costs; such as workman's comp, unemployment and social security. Our driver's base rate is $9.60/hr; the invoicee sees it as $11.04/hr. Labor is the primary expense for invoicing purposes. In addition, we charge $.67 per mile, and we break it down in the following way: .25/fuel,.05/insurance,.04/tires, .03/lube&oil,.05/administrative,.25 depreciation. I tend to think of that as a bit of a W-A-G! For issues of fairness, I charge from the school, not from the bus garage, as our elementaries are fairly distant from the main campus where our garage is located. As far as estimates of yearly costs for comparative purposes (to consider using a contractor), you would have to add all of your costs: repair & maintenance, parts, laundry(mechanics uniforms), insurance, tires, etc, plus mechanic and driver wages for an entire school year. Take this amount, and divide it by the total miles your fleet drove during the year examined. If you are evaluating a contractor, however, hold his feet to the fire to make sure he is comparing apples to apples. LM
