We have a 1996 Chev with a Cat engine with hydraulic brakes...state inspector red tagged it because when he pushes the brakes all the way down to the floor, it looses it's power steering. He red tagged it two years ago for the same thing and we put a new pump on. Assuming that it's not the pump this time, has anyone had any problems like this before? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Ok, I am going through what you said here and I have a question about the part where you say "when he pushes the brakes all the way down to the floor". Your not saying the pedal goes all the way to the floor are you? Because if it does that would be a good place to start.
That system is pretty straight forward and there is not much to go wrong on it. I would say your problem has to be in the booster (behind the master cylinder on the fire wall). That is assuming you pedal is not actually going all the way to the floor.
I guess maybe I should ask if when the inspector is doing this is it sitting still or is the bus moving. That would make a difference. Just working through this here but I am wondering if there is a problem with tight steering. Have you checked to see if any steering parts are tight? If the system is having to work too hard it might not be able to steer and boost at the same time.
I am going to say the pump is worn out again. Possibly the idle is to low . The brake booster blocks off flow a lot when applying brakes to give you your assist so if the pump cant supply the pressure to do make the booster work the flow stops at the power steering box causing it to lose assist power.

If it is indeed the pump there is something else at fault here. There should be no reason for the pump to go out in two years.
