I have 2004 International with a DT 466 E engine and allison auto.I know it has been talked about on here regarding starter issues and wondered if anyone has a fix yet ? The last few weeks I may take 13 or 14 times before it will turn over . This morning the bus was left and the spare went out . Please help !!! It sounds like it's grinding away the flywheel . Thanks

If it's taking that many times to get starter to engaged, the reason it sounds like its grinding the flywheel away is because it is!! you will probably need a stater and flywheel/flex-plate to repair problem, sounds like a good candidate for a Denso starter to me, that's the brand i use on my 05 and older buses now. haven't had to replace a flywheel/flex-plate since. pitch the Delco in the scrap steel. that's just my opinion

Okay pulled starter and the Bendix has some wear and doesn't feel good and starter was rattly . It is a mt 37 and the flywheel seems to have some wear on the teeth where the starter engages but looks good .I am not sure what it would look like new ? can anybody help ? Thanks !!!

Usually a inline 6 motor will stop in one of three places on the flywheel/flex-plate within a few teeth of same, every time you shut engine off.
so i would roll engine by hand and ck rest of teeth around flywheel to see if they all look good or you are just not in the spot that took most of abuse from starter. if there worn you'll be able to tell. if it happened as many times as you stated above it should have at least one spot with alot of wear. if it's worn to much a new starter may give you problems when engine stops inline with bad spot, if you are lucky flywheel may be ok. other wise it would need replaced.
another reason i like the denso starters as stated above, is they seem to engage a little deeper into teeth. i've had 2 flex/flywheels that i figured were marginal as far as wear on teeth tried the 41mt delco on the first one, had problems right from the getgo, starter would catch/lock in flywheel, etc. thought i would have to pull tranny and replace flex , had a parts supplier talk me into a denso starter with same fly/flex and haven't had any problems with it going on 4yrs. the second one put denso on it right away and works great every time, has been over 2 yrs on that one. it's really a judgment call on how bad fly/flex teeth are worn, they should look pretty much all the same all the way around ring shouldn't be hard to tell where starter was grinding
