I'm a driver, not a mechanic and here's what's occurring on my International MaxxForce bus. While driving along, I'll get an amber triangle warning light and a message that the transmission is disabled. I can get out of this situation by throwing the regeneration switch. After a short delay, maybe 5 seconds, the transmission re-engages and soon after that, the warning light goes off.
Is this an emission control problem or a transmission problem? |

| Sounds like an electronic communications issue to me. Get a tech to read the codes. |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it. If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway. Pullin' wrenches for 45 years. |

I am seeing similar occurances with this in many buses not only IC but other brands as well. 90 percent of the time the issue relates to basic maintenance or the lack of it. Power and ground connections are critical in todays buses. The electronic systems being produced MUST have clean power and clean grounds to allow communication to take place between the various computers on buses. Starting at the battery, check and clean all connections. Some may be hidden behind of or in the back of the battery boxes where it is difficult to see. Remove the batteries from the box. Clean the batteries completely. Test the batteries while out. Inspect and clean battery terminals thoroughly. Most systems have multiple cables. Each terminal needs thorough inspection. If needed peel back the tape or heat shrink or rubber surrounding the metal terminal. If any green corrosion is evident it must be removed or cables repaired or replaced. Next check frame connections. Remove grounds cables from the frame and sand frame till bare metal shows. Do the same on the entire cable end. Install a new bolt and nut and tighten properly. Coat all bare metal with a good terminal protectant which will not wash off. Check all connection points at starter and alternator and all other known battery power and ground connections exposed to the elements. If after doing all this the problem still exists test the J1939 circuit. This is the communication backbone on every electronic equipped bus (late 90's to present).
