Has anyone had any issues with the starter bendix hanging in the flywheel on the Cat C7 engines? We have had several units that have had multiple starters installed (Delco 12V 38MT), and been on the back of a hook many times for the same problem. When the problem occurs the starter will do nothing. When tech arrives he can spin the engine backwards and you hear the starter drive disengage from flywheel with a clunk. After that the starter will work fine for who knows how long, a month or two before it happens again. We have 88 of these 2004 shakers with the C7. We have probably 7 or 8 that exhibit this problem. We have swapped starters, and flywheel ring gears. I really thought the ring gear was gonna do it. Cleaned connections. At a loss. Any help is welcome.
My starter guy says these things have a tendency to loose a little retaining ring on the end of the starter (nose end) and that lets the gear go in too far. So this ring serves as a stop. I would say if you bought a rebuilt unit and it still does it they may have left that ring out.
Could this problem happen with a Leece Neville starter? I have an '05 that once in a great while, will not crank. Try hour or more later and will crank and fire up. Has happened twice this winter.
I always wondered if they wore out starters because they crank so long before they actually start... therefore overheating the starter! Rare is the Vision in my district's fleet that starts fast! If it does, it has just gotten back from the dealer with new fuel injectors or it has a Cummins....
