Hi all,
I sure hope someone here can help shed some light on this...
I have a cat 3208 in an old rv. I tried to
start it in the cold and when it wouldn't start, I turned the key off but it just kept going - the starter was going and turning over the engine.
I ran out to disconnect the batteries and while I was doing that the engine quit turning over, but the starter kept going.
That's what it's doing now if I reconnect the batteries the starter makes noise but does not turn over the engine. This is with the ignition off.
I disconnected what I thought was the starter relay or maybe an ignition relay, but I get no change if I connect the battery - still the starter makes noise, but no engine turning over - and ignition still off.
Something froze and now is delivering power to the starter regardless of relay or ignition? Don't know. Do you think I need a new starter? Is the relay located right on the starter assembly?

| Most likely the solenoid on the starter is stuck. Sometimes a good whack with a hammer will get it free, but start budgeting for a starter rebuild.Make sure your batteries are fully charged also. Good luck, Erik |

Yeah, definitely time for a starter replacement. If it isn't a stuck solenoid, it's acorroded shaft that won't let the gear come back all the way and has now welded the contacts together.
Depending on your exhaust configuration, those 3208 starters can be a real bear to remove. Have fun! |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it.
If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway.

| The hammer worked! Batteries are charged. Fuel is flowing. But it's not starting. That's never happened before. Cranking fine - almost wants to start, but no go. Any ideas? |

| If you suspect you at one time ran low on fuel, pump the round handle near the fuel filter housing until it feels pressurized; Bleed the air out of each injector using a 5/8 wrench while someone cranks the ignition. Each injector should spurt fuel. Go counterclockwise on each collar and if you don't get fuel crank until you do, then tighten, and move on to the next one. I'm assuming some mechanical knowledge here, if not find a CAT mechanic to do this for you. |
