I purchased an 02 short 6.5 school bus. I was told the head gasket went bad. The engine was in a basket. I took off the pan and one of the pistons had a chunk of the skirt busted off. It looks like the lobe on the crank hit the skirt. The rod looks to be in good shape. Is this possible

Is it possible for the counter balance on the crank to take out the piston skirt?(and not affect the con rod)

It might be possible given the right circumstances but highly improbable. I'm just thinking out loud here, but what set of circumstances can lead to this?

Crank thrust washer worn/gone, cylinder out of round front to rear to allow piston flotation, wrist pin wear on pin and piston (maybe even the rod) to allow a twisting motion, possible failing torque converter swelling to push the crank forward to it's limit (remember worn/missing thrust washer).

As presented, if the broken skirt is on the same cylinder as the head gasket failure I would suspect the damage was from hydrostatic lock.

I'm thinking by the time it's possible for that to happen you're still looking at a complete tear down, inspect(re:measure), and rebuild if possible (or buy a new engine) plus having the trans rebuilt with a new converter to cover all bases.

It's a machine, not a werewolf.
