I am new to diesel engines and this great website, i have a 9.0 with a mt650 transmission international 1987 s1754. This is the only site I could find on the web with information on this engine. Please help!! The engine in blow clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust. From what info I could find it is a head gasket. I am going to replace it myself. However, after talking to the international dealer. It seems I need to change the head bolts at cost of about $400.00. The head gaskets are abouts $140. The truck is worth $1200 scape value. Do I need to change all head bolts or can some be salvaged on inspection The truck also shakes like crazy which can be caused by the head gasket.

I, also have a donor truck with a 7.3 and an at545 to swap in for 9.0 liter. Would like to change the engines if compatible. Please help

If the dealer is trying to sell you headbolts, they must be "torque to yield" headbolts. In layman's terms, they strech when intially installed to hold the clamp load. On that particular engine, I am not sure if they are, but the dealer parts department should be able to tell you if they are.

If they are torque to yield, you do not want to reuse them since you would be risking the entire headgasket replacement job, one broken headbolt after a few heat cycles can cause the headgasket to leak.

Replacement of the engine with another as you suggest could run into many details that will nickle and dime you to death. But, it could be done. A large factor is the equipment, tools you have at hand to work with as well.

I guess I have more questions than answers. Not to argue with the dealership, but according to my old I.H manuals, there is no mention of "not' being able to re-use the head bolts. Bolt stretch and fretting is easily checked once removed. Then again things do change, seem to recall replacing head bolt on the DT 360's.

Your engine shakes and white smoke? A fueling or lack of fueling issue, perhaps? Are you losing coolant? Is there a loss of cabin heat, or is it pushing coolant out the overflow hose?

Just food for thought. B

I have never heard of reusing head bolts. I've always been told if you reuse the old head bolts you will have to do the job again within a couple years.
