We have a 2001 international that had the Range Inhibit come on today. During the route while in reverse, it would not go anywhere. You can put it in drive, the bus would go sometimes! I pulled out the 40 amp fuse in the battery compartment and put it back in then it worked. Thats how we got it back to the garage. I cleaned connections at the battery of where the fuse wire went into but when I started the engine and put it in reverse and wouldn't work only in drive. Has anyone come across then problem!

Allison 545?
Have seen the NSBU switch turn on the range inhibit.
Easy to change.
Stole this from somewhere else:
"NSBU is the Neutral Safety Back Up switch, it helps tell the the computer which gear your in, if you look at the side of your tranny where the linkage attaches you'll see a black or tan plastic thing with one or two connectors plugged into it."

Sounds like an Allison 2000 to me.

I don't think AT-545s had a "range inhibit" light as they weren't an electronically controlled transmission, it must be a 2000

yes!I found out it is a Allison 2000. I still think it could be the NSBU that was suggested from Harrision Fire but it will take the Allison Transmission Software to find the problem.! I think it could be other things too. It is scheduled for diagnostic Wednesday!

At least I got the Allison part right.
Lots of those switches got replaced under warranty.
Yours might be one that's eligible.

Be sure to check the electrical connections on the transmission. I have had those come loose enough to loose connection. (I've even had them come clear off) I take mine off and put dielectic compound in there and put it back together and put a wire tie around the whole conection so it can not come off again.

bewest we did that today! Our mechanic cleaned all connections and it still did the same thing! What is weard is in the morning or if you haven't driven for a long period of time, it will go into reverse. But once you drive the bus for about 5 to 10 minutes it won't work in reverse. It will work in drive but slips in slow and kind of hard. Any other idea's?

Slips, humm, that sounds like a valve problem (could still be electronic though). I'll check a source today and post if I find out anything.

Edit: My source says you might have a solinoid stuck in the trans. He thinks that you are stuck in 3rd and the slipping you are fealing is a "stall" meaning your tourque converter is "slipping".

Good luck.

When you turn the key off, or pull the fuse this resets the TCM. your trans will work properly until it creates the fault again. The trouble we have had with the Allison 2000 is metal debris in the valve body. Usually from the stator or bearings in the convertor coming apart. Allison replaced all of out torque convertors in our 2002 IC's because of the problem. I have recently had the problem flare up again in my 2006 IC buses with the 2500 PTS. Good luck with it.

Pressure washing can contaminate the synthetic fluid with water. The connections internal to the transmission are not sealte. If enough water gets into the fluid, data signals become crossed. Pressure washing around the NSBU & the main harness inlet will cause this. TranSyn will suspend the water. Once a saturation point has been met, signals will start to misfire.

I may not know the answer but I can usually find who does.

I just got one of our route buses in today with same symptoms described above. Intermittant No Reverse, and sometimes No Forward. Range inhibit lamp will come on for self check at KOEO but sometimes it doesn't. I am trying to get my Nexiq to communicate. Any idea what protocol? J1939 or 1708? It's a 2002 GMCV with a CAT.

I think that mine is fixed. I installed a new NSBU and it has been ok so far. I still need to figure out what is the deal with my Nexiq IQ not communicating. Do the early GMCV allison 2000 use J1939 or j1708? I think I may need to sell all this crap and get a laptop and translator. I can read Gen3 allisons just fine, and the @!#$* want more money for Gen4. Pissed!

being a 2002 it should be 1708 but i was also told they can be 1939, apparently it's in that area that they switched? this is just what my allison guy has told me in the past. as for getting a laptop they are just as frustrating at times.

Now I have another one in here crippled up. It's a 2000 QBRE with a dead keypad. Only has 500,000 actual miles.
