How does your School System or Contractor number their buses?
I noticed many Schools are numbering them with the year of the bus on them.
How's your's number?

Where I work, it's like this:
Our Crowns are numbered regularly 1 through 26 - Except #s 2, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 18 have been either retired or don't exist.
Our older Blue Bird transits are numbered by their capacity followed by a regular number. They are #s 8401-8406 & 7801.
Example(s) - # 7801 is a 78 pax. bus and is the 1st 78 pax. bus that we got.
# 8401 is an 84 pax. bus and is the 1st 84 pax. bus that we got.
# 8403 is also an 84 pax. bus and is the 3rd one that we got.
And so on...
Our one Thomas Saf-T-Liner ER and AmTran Genesis are also numbered the same way. They are #s 8402 & 8404.
Our AmTran-International Conventionals and our one AmTran RE are numbered the same way as the Blue Birds are. They are #s 7201-7212 & 6099 (wheelchair bus).
Our brand new Blue Bird transits are numbered a little differently. They are numbered by their capacity and by another number - except the other numbers start at 99 instead of 1. They are #s 8197-8199.
It's a little hard to explain, but that's the way we do it.
I like numbering them regularly like we do our Crowns, but I also like it when the buses are numbered by the year. I think Durham Student Services and First Student may number by the bus capacity as well in my area.

Our district has a numbering system set up this way. All buses have five digit numbers.
The first number indicates what kind of bus it is. We use 0,1,2,3,6,7,8,9 for the first number.
0 - 29 passenger lift bus
1 - 29 passenger bus
2 - 72 pass lift Vista
3 - 72 pass Vista
6 - 65 pass lift Vista
7 - 65 pass Vista
8 - 90 pass ER with lift
9 - 90 pass ER
As you can see, the buses begining with odd numbers are regular and those that begin with even numbers are orthos.
The next digit is the year. We use one number for digit......6 for 1996, 8 for 1998, 0 for 2000.
The next three numbers are the bus number. We buy over 100 buses at a time so we need three digit place holders.
Example - 37163. 3 indicates it's a 72 pass Vista, 7 indicates it's a 1997 model, and 163 indicates that it's the 163rd bus of that kind.
If it's big and yellow, then it's a school bus!

I know for a fact that Laidlaw Transit numbers their buses with 6-digit asset numbers. The first and last number of each 6-digit number represents the model year for the particular bus. The four digits left in the middle of the number represent what the delivery number of the bus is and when it was received. Here are a few examples:
903606 1996 model year
934449 1999 model year
200730 2000 model year
201241 2001 model year
As far as the First Student buses are concerned with, the ones I have seen also have 6-digit numbers. Some of them have the last 3 digits of the 6-digit number displayed on the bus as well. Those buses are used for field trips since they are easier to identify by a 3-digit number rather than a 6-digit number.
481496 and 491200 would represent a 1993 model year school bus
500570 and 509123 would represent a 1994 or a 1995 model year school bus
598007 and 599563 would represent a 1995 or a 1996 (not sure on that model year) school bus
365478 would represent a 1997 school bus I believe
923467 would represent a 1999/2000 school bus
931405 would represent a 2000 school bus
012345 would represent a 2001 or 2002 school bus
All First Student and Laidlaw buses in my area also have the route number on each of the buses. The route numbers usually go in sequential order from 1-100 (or whatever they stop at). We used to have a bus #0 used as a spare, and then there's 10 buses used for a private school which are numbered with letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, L, M. A charter school used to have buses numbered C1-C4, but not anymore.
And lastly, Clark County School District out in southern Nevada labels their buses with a 5-digit number. The first two digits represent the model year of the bus, the last 3 digits are just an assigned number for the bus. The route numbers are written on a small piece of posterboard material and posted on the right window, maybe the left window, and in front of the dashboard. The "W" at the end of the number means that it's a bus with a wheelchair lift on it. Here is how they number them:
90819 1990 bus
95934W 1995 bus with a wheelchair lift
20983 2000 bus
20985W 2000 bus with a wheel chair lift
I haven't seen any of the 2001's yet, but I think they are numbered like this: 21997, for example.

Our micro buses (type A) are in the 100's.
36-72 passenger buses are in the 200's.
84 passengers are in the 300's.
We have some 72 passengers in the 30's and 40's.

All our buses are number by 4 digits. the first 2 are the year model and the last two are the sequental number.
Examples:
88-1 is the first bus puchased in 1988.
88-2 is the second bus puchased in 1988.
In '92 the sequence changed so that the numbers do not repeat, that is 90-2 and 91-2 get confused by kids looking for bus 2.
New buses are numbered 99-32, 00-33, etc.

Our numbers used to be done in a good way but they all got messed up. We do not number by year or such we number like 1-whatever at this school. This is not the whole district this is just my schools in my area that I have attended.
Elementry: A bus 1 used to be the first bus because it did two routes they changed that and got a perminit bus and it number is 115. The rest are 40-52 and 57 I don't know why it is missing 53,54,55,and56that. There is no 42 driver lost his contract and person who took over came with a bus 116 so that bus is 116.
Middle School: Two towns come togehter. One town has 113,110,4,71,1,112,111,8,6, Then the other town has numbers between 54-109 missing numbers and such. I have a list of all the number there I just can't find the sheet when I find it I will list it.
High School- The middle and high school routes used to be togehter well they split and so the low numbers where at the high School and High Numbers at the Middle School..Well they split and drivers went where they want...so the numbers followed..
High School- 2,3,5,7,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,97,98,118,31,35 I think that's all. You keep the same number when you replace the bus. The number might only change if the bus is replaced with a new contractor.

We still have 35 (2000 All American FE) and 31 (1996 GMC Blue Bird), however 31 is a spare.

When numbering the buses, the K.I.S.S. method works best. Start at #1 and work your way up! No sense in reinventing the wheel! With larger fleets, its usually a good idea to have bus numbers and route numbers separate so spare buses do not cause confusion. I've never understood all the time and energy some folks put into numbering a bus. But hey; whatever works for you!

Until this year, we have used a simple 3 digit numbering system for our buses. Now that we have researched small ways to fund things that we want, we are going to 2 digit numbers. Our letters are $4.00 each, and we display the number in four places on each bus. This small money saver is one place that we can purchase things like new shirts for drivers etc. Now, we're trying to find out about using old pre trip books that have many many days left in them. We put new books in each bus each month, after a 3 year hold time, is there anything keeping us from taking out the formerly used sheets, and reusing the book that had only two days of pre trips on it? (providing it is one of the current format books?) That would be another two dollars per book that we could salvage in expenditures.

Our buses are numbered with the two digit year, then a one or two digit number. Most are in sequencial order (ie: 99-57 then 00-58) but some repeat (ie: 88-21 and 95-21 or 88-31 and 95-31 or 99-12 and 00-12 or 89-24 and 88-24 and 95-24). It is better to do it this way instead of going from 1 and working your way up. This is because if you call in and have a problem with the bus, the mechanic doesn't have to memorize the year of each bus but can tell when the driver radios in the bus number. Our routes are kept separate on Route Changers. For those, we work our way up from one. We are a smaller district, and the dispatcher has a list, so they don't need a fancy numbering system. However, most of the special ed routes are in teh 60's and 70's.

Busboy,we have a 95-21.(see your last post).
Our numbering system is this:The two-digit year and a one or two number regular number are always on the left side,and on most buses just the regular number is on the right side,back,and front.
We have from 1-29,and here they are:
1,V-1,2,V-2,3,00-4,87-4,5,00-6,87-6,7,8,9,11,12,14,15,16,17,18,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,02-28,86-28,29.I didn't include the year on the numbers that are only used once.

Are numbering is smaple we have the month and year the bus was purchase.like 3-83 4-86 5-90 6-91 7-89 8-86 9-86 10-94 11-89 12-96 2-81 1-00 and 14-98 and the raisn for 14-98 they wrecked the old bus and had to replace it and that was it number we won't use 13 but that's how we do it here in Ca Busstop
