Please Help! Children bullied on bus

Parents' children bullied on bus
MESSAGE: I am the mother of two bus riding children. My delima is that my children are constantly being bullied on the bus. Yesterday was the 3rd time one of my children came home with injuries in one quarter of the school year as a result of bulling on the bus. Is it not the bus drivers job to also protect children from physical harm as well as get them saftly to and from destinations? Today I called all around to see if their was help for my delima, but everyone passed me on to someone else, and I never got an answer. I do not want to make matters worse for my children by talking to the bus driver in front of children, but if no one can help me what other choice do I have? I can either say something and possibly make matters worse for my children or allow them to keep comming home bleeding, crying, black eyed, and who knows what else. We finally had to give the boys permission to fight back. I hate to condone any violence, but it is impossible for us to take them to and from school and if the adults in charge are not going to take action, I cannot see any other way. If any bus drivers out there have any ideas on ways to stop the abuse of my children on the bus please help!!! Thanks, Lydia

Lydia, sometimes if the bus is full and the driver is driving in traffic, it's very hard for the driver to see what is going on and they may not be aware of what is being done to your children. Also, some kids can be bery sneaky about their behavior and know when the driver is busy driving. However, I also know as a bus driver and transportation director, some drivers have very good discipline on their buses and seem to see almost everything, and some drivers don't. They tend to ignore it and hope it will go away.
Call your transportation department and set up a meeting with your bus driver. Tell the driver what is going on and that it MUST be stopped. Ask if there is a video camera on the bus. If not, ask if one can be on the bus. Perhaps your children can be moved away from the children who are bullying them. Ask nicely. Just let them know you are very concerned about your children's welfare. I found that parents who come in with a surly attitude ranting and raving at the bus driver and supervisor are not as likely to resolve things as the parent who is willing to sit and talk and try to work with everyone to resolve the problem.
If the driver doesn't handle the problem, talk to their immediate supervisor. Be very firm and let them know that you have talked to the driver and now you are giving them a chance to resolve the problem. If the problem isn't resolved, go to the Principal of the school, then Superintendent, and then school board. Hopefully, it will be taken care of long before then. It is best to go through the proper channels. If the driver isn't aware of what is going on, he or she will certainly appreciate the chance to take care of it themselves and the Supervisor will appreciate the chance to resolve any problems in their department. Don't hesitate to go on "up" with your complaints if the problem isn't taken care of. Every child deserves a safe and happy bus ride. The student on my bus used to love to ride the bus (until the got in high school anyway)
Bullying should not be tolerated. It can make children very miserable and teach them to lash out if the proper people in charge do not take care of it. The "Bully" also needs to be taught at a young age that they can not go through life bullying others.

Could'nt agree with you more Buslady. That would be the way i would handle it. Myself as a Driver we have camera's on all of are buses, once you go though everybody, and you talk to the driver you can watch the tape too.You have to right, at lease where i drive. i have had parent's see me in town while they have their kids with them and the kid's well tell them I'm their driver and i do have parent's ask me then but, in my case i I'm from a small town and everybody knows me. Born and raised But what the Buslady said i would realy go that route and let us know want happen's O.K.

I agree that sometimes it is hard for a bus driver to see everything that goes on, but it isn't just a little hair pulling, and it has happened three times. I would try to call the bus driver and make sure he/she knows that this is going on. Have your children informed the bus driver? Make sure the bus driver is aware of the situation, and find out who is bullieing your children. Most bus drivers would take care of the problem. If you have a bus driver who doesn't care contact your transportation department, and make it clear that this has happened on numerous occasions and that you want something to happen. That should take care of the problem, if not go higher up the ladder, superintendant, board of education if you have to. Be firm that you want this taken care of, but try not to be rude, because the people above the bus driver have absolutely no idea this is going on.
As I always say- "The only bully on this bus is me."
