Hi all, now here's a serious question to those of you who might have faced this situation, some will not understand this, but I am serious.
I have a great company. The most loyal, wonderful drivers, that are hard working and really care about these kids. The buses are all late models,a good running fleet of buses, every year even every "dinger" is removed. I've weeded out the people that didn't care about the kids safety first. I've gotten the pay raised to a good level. The buses are fine. I found extra trips so that most make as much money as they want. They needed me to fix things there, and now that they're fixed...I am bored stiff. I feel like the average chimp could run this company now.. I mean these are really competent people that work for me... not even one slouch ! Should I look elsewhere for the challenge, or just continue in this place? What would others do... or what have others done?

Congratulations! You have put forth the extra effort needed to get your operation where it is today! Where many people fail, you have succeeded. When you go on vacation, you don't have to keep a cell phone or beeper by your side, or call in everyday to get a "sit-rep". Everybody I know in transportation (well, almost everybody) spends their entire career trying to get their operation to function as yours does. Now is the time for you to: 1. Move on to "browner" pastures trying to find another challenge worthy of your efforts. or 2. Enjoy the fruits of your labor, and continue to "fine tune" your operation. Train your likely replacement with all the "ins and outs" of what you did and why. Make sure everyone else shares your comfort and confidence with the operation. Reward them with a christmas or end of year type party that shows your appreciation for them! You and I both know that you couldn't have gotten there by yourself.
Both of the above responses assume you're not considering retirement based on your initial question. Joe

With the great accomplishments you have made you can go in many direction! You said you work for a company? You could move up with this company or be a great asset for a school system! Most of the schools are always looking for a person to step in and get the ball rolling! And with your accomplishments you are ready for the Director's spot! Good Luck in what ever you do!

I'd say stay with it. It may not seem like as much of a challenge now, but if you leave, then things may go back to the way they were. Just enjoy the fact that you now have a much easier job than many people with the same title. If you're bored, look for extra tasks within the department, but don't leave your current position.
Also, as Joe said, work on training someone to replace you, to ensure that when you're ready to retire, it won't fall apart.

Sounds like you're a go getter. How about checking out the National Association for Pupil Transport (NAPT) http://www.napt.org/ They have a new Certification Program and are in need of compitent Instructors. Sounds as if there is a lot you could share with up and coming Transprtation Supervisors and Directors.
Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to. |
