What are most NYS companies doing about the Statewide ban on wireless communications? Does the new law include analog radio use? As driver we are subject to the same distractions cell users experience while talking to the base on our radios.

I think that cell phones should be banned while driving a motor vehicle, buses included. How many times has their been a near miss or a just plain rude driver because they were on a cell phone. This poses a danger to all who are driving. Two-way raidos are a different story however because usually 2-way traffic is quick and to the point. I don't feel that it is very distracting to the driver because it is not really an involved conversation. Plus, it is good from a safety and routing standpoint to have 2-way radios in your buses. We have 2-ways but our policy states no cell phones while the bus is moving. I wish Ohio would adopt a similer law to NY.

I ride a bus in NY, and my company doesn't even use cell phones. However, the law is great and it is for ALL vehicles except emergancy vehicles, and you can only call 911! I feel it will make the rodes much safer!

I really, really, really...wish that Pennsylvania had this law. Everytime I see someone with a cellphone at their ear while they're driving, I get this horrible urge to run over to them and yell "PUT THAT THING DOWN, JUST DRIVE YOU MORON!"... But that's just me.

I have to disagree with the above quote. The nearest I've came to accidents all involved either the two-way radio or the AM/FM radio.
Cell phones or radios -- not much difference.
The experts on this subject found that hands free phones made no difference -- what makes the difference is when the driver has to concentrate. This is where the actual distraction comes from.
Other published data validates the theory that a driver distracted by any source is at risk -- particularly with distractions that require the driver's concentration. Loud kids, screams and unruliness are a major and dangerous distraction on the school bus. Adding a two-way and cell phone increases driver distraction.
Dr. Michael J. Goodman is a human factors research specialist for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). He says "his group conservatively estimates about 150,000 crashes each year are related to ordinary radio use, primarily because it demands the driver's attention."
I've read reports that school bus driver distraction accounts for 23 percent to over 30 percent of the school bus crashes in this country.
Want to use the cell-phone, talk on the two-way or adjust the AM/FM radio? Fine, but first pulling off the road and stoping the bus makes sense to me. (jk)
