As drivers, what is the ONE safety-related question that you ask yourself the most? ...something you are just not sure about.
Supervisors, what is the MOST frequently asked question that pertains to safety issues in your organization?

this question is for wheelchair bus:
What do you do if a person wants to ride the bus and the wheelchair is clearly not meant for transport in a bus (some of the scooters people ride are not made to be tied down in a bus)

These are all good questions... keep them coming! I am trying to come up with some training tools and also working on a newsletter, so hearing questions that you folks in the field have (or are getting) is quite helpful for me. I'll post a link to our newsletter when it is finished in early July.
Keep the questions coming and I'll pop in here and in day or so and give some feedback from an Ohio perspective. |

Thanks! FCPS was very helpful to me when I first started as a supervisor - Linda Farbry actually sent a sample copy of their SOP which assisted me in authoring a driver handbook for my district.

Will I have to defend the policy of not having seat belts on my bus forever? Don't these people know the facts about seat belts and safety yet? I will get seat belts when it is a industry standard and when they have been design for a bus of my size.
I feel confident when I read about all the accidents that buses are in and when you find out how many students actually on the bus are hurt in the bus.... |

Norther SBD, another part to that question that many drivers reply to our parents is that... she has a seatbelt cutter for her, but there is NO WAY that she would have the ability to go to every seat on the bus, and cut 78 seat belts, especially if she were hurt in the accident. Fact of the matter is, it just isn't safe, it may be in the imapct but after that... What?
Another thing is what if the bus (rare situation) were to plunge into a body of water, how would the driver cut every child's belt, without number one killing herself, and number two how would the helpless children know how to escape to safety? |

That describes my bus driver. Last Friday I was over at the bus shop because I didn't have school that day and my bus was there because one of the mechanics went to get the bus from the dealer after having the bus fixed. That mechanic said that he's surprised that the bus is in that good of condition. That bus was 2,000 miles overdue for an oil change, one of the outside mirrors were broken about two months ago, and the stop sign doesn't work properly. I don't know what that mechanic told my driver when he went to go get the bus. |

| IC-RE I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. OR TAKE A BUS LOADED WITH KIDS ON IT'S SIDE WITH A FIRE IN IT. SCAREY THOUGHT!!! NOW ADD, I WONDER IF ALL OF THEM WERE BELTED IN CORRECTLY? HANGING FROM THE BELTS BY WHO KNOWS WHAT. MORE KIDS ARE KILLED LOADING AND UNLOADING THAN ARE KILLED IN CRASHES, YET IN OUR STATE WE CAN NO LONGER JUST HAVE THE LICENSES NUMBER OF THE VEHICLE AND DESCRIPTION OF VEHICLE. MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY DRIVER. NOT ASKING MUCH, CONSIDERING MUST ALSO WATCH KIDS AND OTHER CARS. GO FIGURE! |

Ohio mandates K-3 training within the first two weeks of school, per an administrative rule. One of my job function is to chair a state safety committee and we are working on a formal curriculum for this K-3 program that districts can use to enhance their training - it should be finished in early September of this year.
