CITIZEN ONLINE
LACONIA, NH - A local school bus driver blasted school district officials on Monday saying they should have at least delayed the opening of school Monday to assure that the roads were clear of ice.

Jack Head attended the board’s meeting as a "taxpayer" and told them he was upset with a decision that resulted in upwards of five buses going off the road on Monday morning.

Freezing rain through the overnight of Sunday and into Monday caused extremely slippery roads and provided many area students with an extra vacation day while others got to sleep in late.

Schools were closed in the Winnisquam Regional, Pemi-Baker, Newfound Regional, Inter-Lakes and Waterville Valley schools districts. A two-hour delay was reported for the Franklin, Hill and Kingswood Regional schools.

Laconia’s schools started at their regular time.

Head said — while he has only been driving for the bus company since the beginning of this school year — it was clear to him that Monday morning’s conditions were not suitable for transporting students.

He said slick conditions resulted in heavy chatter on the busing company’s radios as several buses requested assistance after leaving the roadway.

...

School officials said their top concern is always for the safety of the students.
