I am wondering if anyone faces the same quandry as I do regarding bus crashes and when students need to be seen by medical personnel. I know the obvious, blood, etc will have medical units responding. But how about those crashes where there are no apparent injuires, no complaints, and students say they are "ok." On the surface there appears to be no reason to have medical units respond, but if you don't it appears to parents you do not care or did not do your job. But you know in your mind there is no reason for medical personnel to resond, what do you do??? On the way to school is easy, you can have the students report to the nurse before going to class. But what about a trip home??? No inuries, no complaints, damage is such that you know there is little if any chance of an injury. What do you do??? What is the threashold for calling medical units, (other than the obvious). Does the age of students make a difference??? I am curious to know how others handle this quandry.

Most Schools have school police and no matter what the accident is the police have to release the kids and the bus before they leave.Most of the time the children are asked if they feel ok and if they say they kinda ache, they will be transported to the hospital.

In CA, if students aboard, CHP must be called for a school bus accident. The officers are trained to ask if there are any injuries, and if there are - he calls the EMTs. Many "injuries" occur afterward, when the kids arrive home. These injuries are related to the "deep pocket syndrome," I think. And some are legitimate injuries.

Our company has a safety director and our school district's transportation director will both respond no matter how minor the accident. Police will be called to handle traffic or make a report and, if necessary, an ambulance is called.
It may sound like overreacting but the first day of school last year I was rear-ended just as I stopped for a railroad crossing, I had just set my air brakes. There was no damage to the bus but the car had quite a bit and the driver wanted to leave...he was quite anxious and irate that I suggested he stay put (I had gotten his description/plate #, in case he did.) I was glad to have the "bosses" handle the problem.

Paramedics see EVERY passenger on a bus involved in an accident, and decide who goes home (or to school) and who goes to the emergency room.

Every response to your question I have read is excellent but there seems to be one thing missing from all of them that your school district might consider:
Have the school district establish a POLICY for the Transportation Department to adopt and adhere to for all of their personnel. That policy should explicitly state, step-by-
step or situation-by-situation what the driver or assistant's responses should be to an accident for the welfare of their students in addition to their right to claim injury and get EMT for themselves when and if they are injured. Don't leave it up driver judgement because the best of drivers gets scrambled when under the stress of an accident and needs help from other professionals.
