Ok, this is from 'outside' the bus.
This morning I inadvertently ran the reds on a local school bus. I was in absolutely no hurry and wasn't thinking anything like "if only I can get around this bus." The bus was slowing and moved into turning lane for a sidestreet with no lights or kids in sight. I proceeded slowly and just as I passed the rear of the bus, the yellows start and apparently went red as I passed the driver, who honked at me as I proceeded.
Now I'm not looking to blame anyone but myself. Although the drivers intentions were unclear, I should have expected a pickup.
I was travelling pretty slowly, and I expect that if we wanted to, he will have picked up my plate number. That's fine. I understand that and will not be surprised to get a ticket in the mail.
How do I make 'good' with this driver though? I believe his route goes through our community, so I'm bound to see him again. As a caring father of a young daughter (and another on the way) I don't want to be branded with him as 'that guy'.
Is it a lost cause to help with the pit that I've had in my stomach since then, or am I simply destined to be cast into the vat of the 'bad drivers'?

I accept your no contest plea and sentence you to time served!  You've obviously punished yourself enough for this and hence will be more careful in the future. We are all human, stuff happens. If you wait at that same stop at the same time you will see that driver again (unless it was a sub). Speak to him, just like you did here. I'm sure he'll take you off his list. In fact, he will be refreshed and his faith in humanity renewed. You are a breath of fresh air. 
P.S. Drivers don't really have lists 
I don't mean to make light of the situation, it is a GRAVE matter but you seem to understand this. |

If I understand you correctly, then I'm not convinced you erred and would hesitate to blame you for what happened. Lights should be activated far enough in advance to alert traffic to what is happening. It doesn't sound like that happened here. Were I the driver of a school bus that signaled late, one option would be to continue through the stop, turn-a-round and try the stop again. If I chose to stop quicker than traffic might expect I could hardly blame traffic that near the bus for not stopping. I don't like the situation, as you explained it, and can only hope the kids are properly trained not to cross until receiving the bus driver's signal to cross. (jk)
