In light of the terrible things that happen at bus stops do districts appoint parents or community members to watch elementary (and possibly secondary) bus stops? For large stops such as a duplex, condos or apartment building does the building staff or security supervise the stop? I hope to god some stops are monitered by SOMEONE. These things that have happened are terrible

A lot of elemantary parents will stand out at the bus stop with their children, but the school district doesn't require them to do so.

We encourage parents to monitor their children's bus stop, but rarely see anyone except for the elementary parents. We'll pick 'em up and drop 'em off, but in between they belong to mom and dad!

1st though 3rd grade or easily disorientated are watched over. Anything unusual is scrutinized. If someone is always at the stop, but not there today, this kind of situation is usually checked out before releasing the student. Some parents give specific written instructions in the event no one is at the stop to receive the child. No k child is released unless someone is at the stop to receive the child, except by written permission to do so.

This may be of interest, concerning seeing kids off at their bus stop. Susan Yahn had booked the American Airlines morning flight to Los Angeles, but she decided to take a later flight, so she could see her children off at the school bus stop.
Her husband said, "My wife really had a near miss. But she was a good mother who said, `I want to see my youngest off to school.' I'm just happy she's fine."

Boone County Sheriff Mike Helmig worked to change a bus route when a sex offender moved to Florence, Kentucky. Now the bus stops at every house, letting children on and off as close to their front doors as possible. It's the best way school officials say they can guarantee the children's safety from a convicted molester who lives on that street, says the Cincinnati Enquirer's story, "Megan's laws start to take effect." I can't speak for all over the district but on my route which is a mixed urban rual route for my elementary I have parents at almost every stop. Some have a convention going on Neighbors visiting. It does my heart good. On my middle high route I will see a few people scattered throughout the neighborhood working on flower beds etc sneaking an peak at the kids. The funny thing is that once the bus leaves these people have finished what ever they were doing and go in. I suspect that this goes on in a good many areas without bus drivers being aware of it.

You are right stevebus-I've noticed it on my bus run. Parents watching through the windows. Neighbors letting the dog out or gardening. People warming their cars up in their garage but waiting until the bus comes first. Maybe not organized but I think there's more to it then meets the eye.
