The Rutherford County Schools transportation director accused of sexual harassment has resigned.
Dewey Patton, who has run the school's bus program since August 2001, submitted his resignation letter to Schools Director Harry Gill during a hearing today.
As part of an agreement between Patton and the school system, Patton will remain on paid administrative leave until Dec. 14, when his resignation officially takes effect. School officials also agreed to sign a letter stating that the sexual harassment complaint against him was unsubstantiated.
In August, transportation secretary Ann Vinson filed a sexual harassment complaint against Patton after he fired her 40 days before she was to retire in October. School officials conducted a four-week investigation and found that, though the sexual harassment claims against Vinson were unsubstantiated, Patton had acted unprofessionally by having temper tantrums and asking several contractors and bus drivers for dates.
