| What does everyone have planned for October 19 - 25? It's National School Bus Safety Week! Let's discuss any activities that you may have planned and any great ideas! |

We have several things planned this year. There are six of us drivers planning and preparing for this years activities. A few things we are doing:
A student poster contest within the district - Grades K-8
Students will draw posters on what they know about school bus safety. We've done this for about three years and the kids have alot of fun with it. We purchase prizes for the kids and they compete with others in their grade level. We have a 1st thru 3rd place winner in each grade level, and a grand prize winner for elementary, and one grand prize winner for middle school. Some of the prizes include the Blue Bird bus banks, gift certificates, and two grand prizes to be determined. Each of the winners will receive a ribbon indicating their placement, and all students that participate will receive a participation certificate.
We also are planning to do our bus evacuation drills that week.
Our Transportation Director is also taking all of us drivers out for breakfast. We usually receive some sort of school bus gift from her.
We also are planning to take one of our newer buses to our local Wal-Mart. There we will display the bus with a banner on the side of the bus indicating awareness of National School Bus Safety Week. I had the banner made a couple years ago and looks very nice on the bus. Displaying the bus gives the public a chance to come and see what today's school buses are like. We explain to those interested how all of the safety equipment works. This day also gives us a chance to pass out any handouts pertaining to school bus safety.
Another thing we have done in the past and are continuing this year, is a public bus driving day. We take several of our buses to the local fairgrounds (which is located directly across from Walmart). We set up a ROADEO style course where the public has the opportunity to get behind the wheel and see what its like to drive a bus. We've had alot of fun with this in the past and have had a pretty good turn out when we do it. We advertise on our local radio station, newspaper, and on rental signs. We like to take one of our old conventional buses, an older transit, and a new transit bus so that folks can see the improvements that have been made to school buses over the years.
There is alot of planning and preparing for all of this. All of our work has always been done on a voluntary basis.
Well that's what's going on in our district that week. It's going to be busy for sure !!

Hey Jason How old do ya have to be to drive at your public rodeo?? When I'm old enough I just may come down to try it out!!! ( I turn 16 in 2 years!)

| Actually the only thing we do require is to have a valid driver's license. We've never put an age restriction on it. Our Transportation Director's son is 17 and is going to drive this year. He's excited to do it. |

| Hey that public roadeo thing sounds cool. If i was able to make that couple hour trip. I would definately come and do that. Sounds awesome. |

Visit your local bus dealer, chances are they will be nice and let you drive one around the lot.

My school district in the past has conducted bus evacuation drills during the School Bus Safety Week. This is a good chance for all those riding to find out what to do in an emergency, it is too bad they don't do it more than once. |

We are having a paid training/safty day! Then at noon we eat, the food is provided by the district. And a softball game after we eat. The bosses will be up against some of the bus drivers! Should be fun. |
