Lately, the rear brakes have been grabbing in my bus so I'm usually assigned #85, a TC2000 RE. I love the rear engined buses(we only have three of them, #83-85) and I always choose 85 as my bus. Why? Well, 85 is a speed demon compared to the other two(the turbocharger drowns out the engine sound in it haha) and it takes turns so much easier than the conventional I usually drive. But, when my bus is back from the brake job, all will be good again.

As the driver of the only special needs lift bus at my school this past year, I basically had two spare buses available just for me! One was an '86 BB All American (used rarely) and the other a '93 Thomas Vista. My regular bus (98 Vista, #33) was so dependable, it was only out of service once during the school year.
As for other regular buses, the mechanics decide which spares to assign, but will accommodate requests if possible.

Just wondering, but what does the M, L, and B in front of the number represent??

Unless your a sub filling in for a regular route driver, no choice. But if our reg. route drivers need a spare, they can pick what ever one they want - Our Subs @ South Range...

#5 1980 Superior/IHC
#18 1985 Carp/IHC
#22 1988 Carp/GMC
No one ever drives the GMC's, unless they want a tow truck to pick them up. GMC's in my opinion have poor tranies. But yeah, our reg. route drivers can pick from any of those buses there. |

| At the district I drive for, we have TC2000 front engine 66 passenger Blue Birds. Our 1993s are the oldest spare buses (5 of them). We have a few Micro-bird wheel chair small buses as spares. They are a little tired but reliable. Our head bus driver chooses the spare buses we drive. |

Our sub buses are spread out over all the years. We call them "Activity" buses, which means they're up for grabs if we need a spare or if there's a field trip. In our Activity Bus Fleet, We've got (so far):
five 2003 Thomas Freightliner CE
one 2002 IC CE
one 2000 Thomas International CE
three 1998 Carpenter International CE
four 1994 Thomas International CE
one 1989 Thomas International CE
Our fleet is all conventional. All full size buses have DT466 (pre-1995) or DT466E engines. The special needs (short) buses have T444E engines. The new Thomas' have Caterpillars...not sure which engine.
We are assigned a sub bus, but no one complains if we just take one of those...if one of them is booked on a field trip, they'll just take another bus if they need to leave while I'm out on my morning or afternoon run.

The CAT engine you are talking about should be a 3126E.
We have spares varying through the years. We have a couple '93s, a '94 (the only one with air brakes that no one likes to drive), a couple '96s, and even a '01. |
