I am a new director of a school district and I have run into a what I feel is a petty issue. But are there any standards or policies regarding driver footwear?

The company I drive for here in Nova Scotia lists under driver responsibilities that "Drivers are to wear a black leather type shoe at all times. Sneakers and open toe shoes are not permitted". Incidentally we're also required to wear white shirts with black tie and black pants. I think it's great (but that may have to do with my military background).

I was origionally in favor of any shoe that provided full coverage and support, however I settled on being ok in my dress code for sandals. Provided that they have support fully around the ankle AND over the forward, top of the foot.

We are allowed to wear any style shoes and sandles if they have a strap around the heel.
Some have said my Birkies are not good enough but I haven't had a problem yet.

My drivers are not aloud to wear any sandals or any type of shoe that is open! The heat from the engine can really burn you!
The driver usually bring their driving shoes in with them and change before leaving out on their routes.

Our dress code regarding shoes is simple: no open toes, no sling backs, no extra long laces, laces must be tied, no heels higher than 3/4 inch, dark color preferred, and should look presentable and not too worn out... tennis shoes/sneakers are acceptable.

To let everyone know....I am an OBI at my district. At the beginning of the month I had a meeting and learned that in the state of Ohio a new law says that no shoes are to be worn while driving that do not have a packing, or strap on the back of shoes.
