Does your district hire school bus drivers as mechanic or office assistants for when they do not have a route (in the middle of the school day) or after their routes are finished? Does driver seniority factor into who gets to become an assistant?
I am just curious because when I drive a school bus, I am interested in either becoming a mechanic's assistant or an office assistant for the middle of the day when I do not have any routes to do. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

No, we don't. Most of our drivers and attendants work 7 or more hours a day anyway. They are guarenteed 6 hours so there is no real need.

In our district most drivers eventually move into positions such as a router or a mechanic's assistant (my old driver just moved into the garage). In fact, our transportation director (who just retired) moved from a driver to a washer to a router before taking the big positon. But I don't think any do both at the same time.

I have a friend that just finished a mechanics (School) program and drives a school bus now! But would like to start working on the buses when the position opens up.
Sometimes, if you have good skills and the transportation staff see it, you can move up in the office, either as an assistant or clerk to the director, or move into a routing position...ect.
I feel the drivers should have the opportunity to move up in this business!

Between am & pm shifts we have crews of drivers who repair seats,wash buses,and gas buses. anyone can sign for a crew but positions are appointed as per seniority.

My district hired one of the drivers to be an Administrative Assistant, but she had to give up her full-time route. She can still substitute, though. The only other jobs available for drivers are working in one of the schools cafeterias or as a parapro in Sp. Ed.

We have several individuals who work at the schools as lunch monitors and recess monitors. We have a Driver Mechanic and a Mechanics Helper. Our Bus Washer works for a private contractor and works in the garage between his runs.
The only ones at this time who "work" for the Transportation office are those who are trying to gain the required training experience to obtain their 19A Examiner certification from the state. (catch22= you have to have 2 years of experience training to become certified to train) So they work for free to get the experience. One reason I can't get certified, I don't have the free time to dedicate to it, I work at another job in between runs.

Hey Bob!
A full route for our district is only 4.5 hours a day, so we have several drivers who work as cooks in between routes. I work as a mechanic whenever I'm not on the road.
Also, from time to time we have driver/custodians. Keeps things interesting trying to figure out who is where and when and why!
And yes, seniority gets you what you want!

Yes we do have some driver's that work in the office and the print shop. at school one driver has been here for 10 years that is about the only seniority here. My boss doesn't go by seniority its the one that kiss her ass!! we have a sub that comes in when she not driveing and hangs out all day. so she can get want she want's she has even been sent out on trips over seniority drivers. when the driver have not been asked if they want the trip. but yes we do have drivers work in the office (subs) seniority is kind of a laugh Busstop
