Does your district have many buses operating late in the evenings, on the weekends, over the holidays or during the summer? Do you consider this to be an advantage or a disadvantage? Do drivers usually volunteer for these trips or do you have to be begged?

Since we provide only moderate summer school transportation there is not a problem getting drivers to volunteer to work the summer schedule. We do very little work during holidays and drivers that want to work sometimes can. Known activity trips are assigned with the routes as they are bid, so that there are as few surprises as possible. There are always extra trips coming available, and usually filling them isn't a great problem, since they will be eligible for time and 1/2 pay. Joe

We have an average amount of evening and weekend field trips... some of our drivers make pretty good overtime when they choose to take it. Our summer routes are not mandatory, and for the past few years we have had more routes than drivers, so if you they want to work, we have it. The summer has more routes than during the regular school year because we transport more special needs children to a central school for the district.

I have done summer school for the past two years, but only because I wanted too. The most senior drivers are choosen for that. As far as evening time goes we are all on a rotation for the trips, and I probably take 1-2 trips during the week or weekend.

My district does not provide bus transportation during summer school. The parents are responsible for ensuring that the student gets to school. This is nice, because I can earn extra money working for the scout camp.
