Hey guys, I recieved my oil analysis back for my non-egr 2004 DT466E. Good news was all the wear metals were low, except for lead, it was a little higher than the universal standard. They also found potassium and sodium levels were a high also, indicating a slight bit of coolant in the oil. It was so low that the % coolant in oil was marked as "possible". So, what would you guys do about this? The truck gets driven maybe 5-10,000 miles a year and sits the rest(except for a short drive to keep everything kosher). Is there any of the products on the market that would help seal up the O-rings on the sleeves? I'm 99% positive that is where the coolant would/is getting into the oil. Something like the Bars Leaks or another product. What would you do? |

I'm just trying to wrap my mind around a 2007 bus getting coolant in the oil! This thing should be under warrenty and therfore the dealer should take care of any problems you may have. Are you sure that you didn't have a driver put coolant in there once upon a time? For instance; I had a driver tell me he needed washer fluid today. Guess what it was he was pointing to! BRAKE FLUID RESIVIOR!!! I said; don't you dare add anything to my bus without telling me first. (I get kind of possesive when something like this happens) I'm just saying don't believe every test you run just because it says you have a problem. I would run a second test exspecially if the amounts are low enough not to cause a problem. Maybe pull a sample in about 1000 miles.
I personally wouldn't add any Bars Leak or similar product.

| This is a 2004 International 4400 (240,000 miles) with the DT466E in it. Not a school bus, but, you guys are the best source of info for this engine. So, with that info, can you guys give me a little more advice? Please? |

| In our world that engine would be repaired before it self destructed. But as your world is different try this first,GM# 12378254 sealing tabs used on almost every Chevy made or repaired. Our older 2000 models had two sealed bolts through the front cover and into the coolant passage, that could get that kind of small leakage. The 2004 engine in one of our support units looks a little different and may have a better gear train arrangement. Good luck. |

I wouldn't add any kind of stop leak. I've seen that stuff block passages to heads, block passages to air compressors, etc.
I would monitor the oil samples closely since the unit is not used that much, and run it.
One test you can do is drop the oilpan and pressurize the cooling system once the coolant is detected in the oil sample and see where the coolant is coming from. If it comes from around the crankshaft, it is the oil cooler, if it comes from around the liners, it is the liner seals, if it comes from the oil drain back from compressor, it is the compressor. At this point I don't think any this testing would be conclusive.

| I agree BJ. With the very minimal amount that was detected and knowing there is fresh oil in it when my delivery season comes around, I'll just watch the coolant level. Thanks guys. |
