1992 Cummins 6CTA8.3 mechanical:

I have a couple of leaks, one is at the injector and it leaks quite a bit (it's the 5th injector from the front of Engine). I stuffed a paper towel under the injector (you can see in picture) and it soaks up the diesel keeping it from running down side of block and dripping to ground, I believe it is the injector leaking.

The other leak is a high pressure line where is screws in, also pictured below.

I would like to repair these myself if possible. Are these fairly easy to repair. I need to get the correct parts as well. Any ideas would be appreciated. I searched for instructions on replacement with no luck. Thanks, AL

could it just be a O-Ring leaking?

I just cleaned off the high pressure line that screws on top of the injector ( Injector #4 ). I think part of the leak is coming from where the 19mm nut screws on top of the injector. I wrapped it with a paper towel and just got back from a test drive. The paper towel had diesel on it when I got back. So part of the leak is from the top. There was also some diesel below on the side of the block.

The injectors may be of a Bosch design the line pressure can erode the tip of the line at the injector and the cone on the injector as well you can try to resurface the line with emery paper or just replace it. The injector is of a body and nozzle design and the nut holding the nozzle into the body could be loose. If this engine has not had injectors changed or pulled and checked in a long time I would take it to a shop to have the repairs made, special tools are needed to remove just the injector and not pull the sleeve with it. Which will cause the cylinder to fill with coolant. If you go ahead and remove the injector yourself make sure you get the copper washer from the bottom of the injector out. Be careful if you damage the bottom of the hole removing it, that is part of the head and almost impossible to repair so the injector will seal.

It depends on the level of your mechanical skills and how soon you need the unit back on the road. Do you know a mechanic nearby to give pointers as you do the job? Do the injectors have two studs or bolts on either side or do they screw into the head, the screw in kind are the easier ones.( sorry I can not see your pictures)The ones with s/b are the ones that get stuck the worst.Either way you will need to take the injector to a pump shop or get one from a dealer You will need the CPL number from the data tag and the engine s/n as well to get the right parts.

I don't know if this is the same for the 8.3, but here is a video I found with a how to on removing injectors from a 5.9 cummins. It may be similar or helpful. I'm sure there are other youtube videos out there that would be helpful.

tigger2: I've changed a couple of engines, several clutches in the past on Gassers. NO Diesel engine work.

Here are the links to the pics I posted. I think mine are the bolt type.

matts4290: the tool he made sure makes it easy to pull the injector straight up.

Thanks....
